HAARLEM (Neth.) -
DSS opened the Promotion/Relegation Pool on Saturday (August 19) with a comfortable 10-2 win against Onze Gezellen.
The teams meet again on Sunday at the site of Onze Gezellen, also in Haarlem.
DSS finished the regular big league-season in fifth place and opened its second half against Onze Gezellen, which finished in third place in the second highest league ('Overgangsklasse').
In the game, which was played in some strong winds, DSS struck early with five runs in the first inning off of starter Raymond Rutte.
With that, it appeared that DSS was en route to a big victory, but Rutte recovered and gave up only two more runs in the next five innings.
DSS added three more runs in the eighth off of reliever Rob Dreijer.
DSS-starter Donny Breek had a strong outing and struckout ten batters in five innings.
In the first three innings, the righthander struckout nine batters.
He retired the side in the first, then walked the lead-off hitter in the second, but followed with three strikeouts.
In the third, he gave up a lead-off single and again struckout the next three batters.
DSS collected 16 basehits, including three by Kevin Nieveld, who doubled twice and also homered.
All ten players used in the batting order of DSS had at least one basehit.
Onze Gezellen recorded five basehits, including three by (former DSS-player) Joffrey Heus and a homerun by Hugo Koehorst.
