Neptunus wins against Pioniers on good baserunning
Nederlands

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus outscored Hoofddorp Pioniers 8-2 on Thursday-evening (July 20). The team got a fine performance from starter Diegomar Markwell and solid bullpen-work from Loek van Mil and Jan Tomek.

Neptunus outhit Pioniers only 10-9, but struck on the basepaths. The team did some fine baserunning, including two double-steals. Neptunus stole six bases, which accounted for a major contribution to the scoring in this game. The six stolen bases were the highest total this season for Neptunus in one game. The league-high in one game is eight, which was accomplished on April 29 by Pioniers. Tonight, the home team stole only one base.

Playing in his first game tonight for Pioniers was outfielder Chris Garia, who earlier this month participated with the Netherlands Baseball Team in the World Port Tournament. Like last season after completion of the Haarlem Baseball Week, Garia joined Pioniers for the remainder of the season. This year, he started the season in an Independent League, but was released.

Complete schedule

Pioniers got into scoring position first in the game, which had some strong winds. The game began with an overcast after it had rained somewhat in the late afternoon. However, the field was fine and during the game, the clouds cleared.

In the bottom of the first inning, Dudley Leonora and Jeffrey Arends both singled with two outs for Pioniers, but a force play-grounder followed.

Neptunus then opened the score in the top of the second inning off of Lars Huijer. Gianison Boekhoudt led off with a single and Daniel Fernandes walked. The two then executed a double-steal and both scored on a 2-out single by Shaldimar Daantji.

Pioniers got one run back in its second at bat off Diegomar Markwell. Max Draijer led off with a double and scored on a following single by Glenn Bakker. However, he was picked off first base moments later. With two outs, Joey Eeman was hit by a pitch and Chris Garia reached on a throwing error, but they stranded.

In the third inning, Markwell gave up singles to Dudley Leonora (lead-off) and Max Draijer (two outs), but they also were left behind. With Leonora on first base, Neptunus-rightfielder Christian Diaz made a great running catch on foul territory on a fly hit by Jeffrey Arends.

Lars Huijer retired the side in the third and fourth inning, but Neptunus then rallied for three runs in the fifth at bat to take some more distance. And again, a double-steal contributed. With one out, Huijer hit Shaldimar Daantji with a pitch. The veteran then stole second base and next batter Stijn van der Meer walked. Shortly hereafter, Daantji and Van der Meer performed the double-steal and scored when next batter Benjamin Dille singled. An error then followed on a grounder by Christian Diaz. Wit two outs, Neptunus added another run on a single by Gianison Boekhoudt to make it a 5-1 score.

In the bottom of the fifth, Mervin Gario led off with a single, but the Neptunus-defense then made a double play. Moments later, Jeffrey Arends hit a line drive homerun over the leftfield-fence, but that would be the final run for the home team.

Neptunus scored two more runs in the seventh off of new pitcher Glenn Wassink. Benjamin Dille led off with a single and the bases got loaded with one out when Dwayne Kemp walked and Gianison Boekhoudt singled. Dille was 4-for-5 in this game and Boekhoudt was 3-for-5, making them accountable for seven of their team's ten basehits. With the bases loaded, Daniel Fernandes delivered a 2-run single to increase the lead to 7-2.

In the eighth inning, Neptunus scored its last run in the game off of Scott Ronnenbergh. With one out, the lefthander walked Stijn van der Meer, then gave up a ground-rule double to Benjamin Dille. With two outs, Van der Meer scored on a single by Dwayne Kemp.

In the top of the ninth, Luuk ter Beek took the mound for Pioniers to make his big league-debut and struckout the first batter. Hereafter, the righthander faced pinch-hitter Darryl Collins, who also made his debut in the highest league. Collins is the grandson of longtime Neptunus-coach Jan Collins, who himself had been the catcher for the Rotterdam-squad for many seasons. Collins appeared to hit a basehit in his first at bat, but the ball was just caught by centerfielder Chris Garia. As a flyout ended the inning, Ter Beek retired the side in his first big league-outing.

Diegomar Markwell retired the side in the sixth inning. He was then relieved by Loek van Mil, who also retired the side in the seventh and eighth inning. Jan Tomek pitched the ninth inning for Neptunus. The Czech righthander gave up a pinch-hit single to Shurman Marlin with two outs, but then closed the inning and the game with a strikeout.
