Neptunus decides game against UVV from 6th inning on
Nederlands

VLEUTEN (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning on Sunday (May 21), added four more runs and went on to win 8-2 against Pickles UVV.

In today's game, 25 basehits were recorded, 15 of them by Neptunus. Shaldimar Daantji and Gregory Muller both had three basehits for Neptunus. Randy Daal and Sergino Martis collected three hits for UVV. Muller and Martis homered.

It was a sunny afternoon in Vleuten, former KNBSB-chairman (and current acting treasurer of UVV) Ruud van Zetten baked hamburgers, the game was well-attended, former big league-pitcher and announcer (Quick Amersfoort) Rijk van den Bunt covered the game for local radio-station RTV Utrecht, the two umpires did a fine job, there were some nice hits and there were some great plays.

But whatever happened on the field wasn't that important, as the best view today was that of Neptunus-pitcher Orlando Yntema walking around in good spirits and playing with his young son. The righthander has been bothered by health-problems in the past weeks since returning from the World Baseball Classic. After having traveled to the Dominican Republic due family-circumstances, he pitched only once during the exhibition season. As his problems continued, he was hospitalized. One-and-a-half-week ago, he successfully underwent surgery, then returned home to recover. At the field, Yntema was greeted by his teammates and other members and fans of Neptunus. Yntema stated he was feeling well, but still needs more examinations. But it gave everyone a good feeling of seeing Yntema attending the game.

Complete schedule

UVV-starter Kevin van Veen allowed only two batters to reach base in the first three innings. With two outs in the first at bat, the righthander gave up a single to Christian Diaz, who stole second base, but stranded there. In the third, with two outs, he gave up a single to Shaldimar Daantji. He also stole second base and moved when an error followed, but was then left behind.

Neptunus opened the score in the fourth. Christian Diaz led off with a double, then a bunt-attempt by Dwayne Kemp was nicely caught by catcher Rodney Daal. Moments later, Diaz scored on a double by Gianison Boekhoudt, which hit the top of the fence in centerfield. A great defensive play followed by third baseman Mike Bazuin on a hard hit by Daniel Fernandes, who was eliminated at first base. On this play, Boekhoudt advanced to third base, then scored on a single by Ruar Verkerk. Gregory Muller also singled, but Neptunus left two runners behind. While Van Veen gave up some hard hits, there was no one warming up in the UVV-bullpen.

Neptunus-starter Kevin Kelly retired the first seven batters he faced. With one out in the third, he gave up a single to Sergino Martis and with two outs, he hit Jelle Blaauw with a pitch, but UVV left the two runners behind. In the fourth, the righthander gave up a double to Randy Daal, but he also was left behind.

In the top of the fifth, there were three nice outfield-catches. Shaldimar Daantji led off for Neptunus with a single, but hereafter, rightfielder Berend Ruben made two nice catches on line drives by respectively Stijn van der Meer and Christian Diaz. Hereafter, Dwayne Kemp drove the ball into leftfield, but it turned foul. However, leftfielder Julian Goins (who is a regular catcher) kept on running, made a great catch running, ran into the fence and hold onto the ball to end the at bat.

It was a busy afternoon for the outfielders today. In total, there were 31 catches, including 26 in the outfield. Seventeen hits of Neptunus-batters were caught, 15 of them in the outfield. For the record, Stijn van der Meer and Christian Diaz both were eliminated by all three outfielders.

As Neptunus was unable to take some distance, UVV came alongside in the bottom of the fifth. Julian Goins led off with a single, then Sergino Martis lined the ball into leftfield for a 2-run homerun that tied the score.

Neptunus immediately re-took the lead in the next at bat. Gianison Boekhoudt led off with a walk and Daniel Fernandes singled. A bunt-attempt then ended in a force out on third base, but Gregory Muller followed with a runscoring single to give Neptunus a renewed 3-2 lead. The bases got loaded when Jochem Koedijk also singled, which led to a pitching change. José Moreno took over and he got a force play-grounder by Shaldimar Daantji, but that also brought in Verkerk and made it a 4-2 score.

After Moreno had retired the side in the top of the seventh, UVV got into scoring position again in its seventh. With one out, Sergino Martis singled, but was caught stealing. Next batter Berend Ruben singled and moved on a following throwing error. Hereafter, Jelle Blaauw walked and then Neptunus also made a pitching change. Misja Harcksen took over and closed with a strikeout. The former pro also pitched the next two innings.

Neptunus took some more distance in the eighth. With one out, Ruar Verkerk singled, which led to the next pitching change. Gilian van Lith was brought in, but the lefthander was greeted with a 2-run homerun by Gregory Muller. With two outs, Shaldimar Daantji singled and Stijn van der Meer walked. That brought out UVV's Head Coach Ty Eriksen to the mound again for another pitching change. Side-arm pitcher Jonah Van Bemmelen took over and got an inning-ending flyout, but he then gave up two more runs in the top of the ninth.

Van Bemmelen walked lead-off hitter Dwayne Kemp, who then scored all the way from from first base on a double by Gianison Boekhoudt. With two outs, Gregory Muller walked to reach base in his fourth consecutive plate appearance. Urving Kemp added a runscoring single and a following throwing error to the plate led to runners on second and third base and another pitching change. Roderick Hennekes became the fifth pitcher of the afternoon for UVV and got a flyout, but Neptunus now led 8-2.

In the bottom of the eighth, Randy Daal and Mike Bazuin singled with two outs off of Harcksen, who then closed with a strikeout. In the ninth, Harcksen walked Berend Ruben with one out. He became the final runner to get into scoring position after advancing on a grounder, but a flyout ended the game and that earned Harcksen his third save of the season.
