Hoofddorp Pioniers wins big in Bussum
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - Hoofddorp Pioniers won with a big 13-3 score in seven innings against HCAW on Thursday-evening (September 21) in the opener of their final 3-game series in the Championship Pool. With the win, Pioniers ended a 5-game losing streak, while HCAW extended its losing streak to eight games.

Pioniers took an early 3-0 in the top of the first inning off of Sedley Karel. The righthander made his first start of the season after having been used mostly as a closer. HCAW came alongside, but in both the fifth and sixth inning, Pioniers rallied for four runs to take more distance.

Pioniers collected 11 basehits, including three by Max Draijer, who batted in four runs. Mark Smit and Mervin Gario both scored four runs. Shurman Marlin scored three runs and batted in three. Kevin Dirksen homered for HCAW, which recorded seven basehits.

Complete schedule

Hoofddorp Pioniers opened the score with three runs in the top of the first inning. HCAW-starter Sedley Karel, who made his first start of the season, walked three batters and hit another one. With that, it appeared that Pioniers would take a decisive early lead, but that didn't happen. HCAW came alongside and Pioniers didn't decide the game until the fifth inning when it rallied for four more runs.

In the top of the first inning, Karel hit lead-off hitter Mark Smit with his first delivery of the game. The righthander then walked next batter Mervin Gario and got the bases loaded with one out when he also walked Shurman Marlin. Karel followed with a strikeout, but then gave up a 2-run single to Max Draijer. Moments later, a passed ball enabled Marlin to score and make it a 3-0 score. With runners on second and third base, the long opening at bat ended with a flyout.

In the bottom of the first inning, HCAW got two runs back off starter Luuk ter Beek. The rookie walked lead-off hitter Delano Selassa, who stole second base shortly thereafter. After Ter Beek struckout the next hitter, he gave up a single to Kevin Dirksen. That moved Selassa to third base, who then went on to score on a passed ball. Dirksen also advanced on the passed ball, moved on a grounder, then scored on a single by Rossini Frolijk. Another passed ball brought Frolijk to second base, but he stranded there, as Ter Beek closed with a strikeout. With that, the long first inning ended, as it took 29 minutes to complete the opening at bat.

After the tough first inning, Sedley Karel recovered and threw three fine innings, striking out five of the ten batters he faced. Only one hitter of Pioniers reached base in the second, third and fourth at bat combined. That was Mervin Gario, who singled with two outs in the second inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, Diamond Silberie doubled for HCAW with two outs, but was left behind. This was the first basehit for the rookie while playing in the main-squad. However, this was not his first official big league-hit, as these games are not part of the regular season.

HCAW came alongside in the third inning when Kevin Dirksen homered with one out to make it a 3-3 score. This was HCAW's first homerun in the Championship Pool.

Pioniers re-took the lead in the top of the fifth inning, scoring four runs. The team then added four more runs in the sixth and reached the 10-run difference in the seventh at bat to finish the game via the mercy-rule.

In the fifth inning, Mark Smit led off with a single and Mervin Gario was hit by a pitch. The runners moved on a double-steal, which was followed by a throwing error, enabling Smit to score the go-ahead run. Gario advanced on a grounder and scored the next run when an error was made on a grounder by Shurman Marlin. He hit the ball back to Sedley Karel, who made a nice defensive play, but then threw the ball high over first base, enabling Marlin to reach second base. With two outs, Marlin scored on a double by Max Draijer, who went on to score himself on a single by Glenn Bakker. With Pioniers now leading 7-3, Moreno Vork took over the pitching from Karel, who struckout seven batters. Vork got an inning-ending force out, but then gave up four more runs in the sixth at bat.

Joey Eeman led off the sixth inning with a single, then Mark Smit walked and Mervin Gario also singled. Eeman tried to score on Gario's hit, but was eliminated at the plate. The bases the got loaded when Vork hit Dudley Leonora with a pitch. Hereafter, Vork uncorked a wild pitch, which led to a run. With runners on second and third base, Vork struckout Shurman Marlin, but the third strike ended in another wild pitch, resulting in a run. Pinch-hitter Gianni Frolijk and Max Draijer followed with runscoring singles, which lifted the lead to 11-3.

Pioniers reached the 10-run difference in the top of the seventh inning. Jasper Popken became the new pitcher for HCAW and he was greeted with a lead-off double by Joey Eeman. He moved on a wild pitch, then the bases got loaded when Popken walked Mark Smit and hit Mervin Gario with a pitch. It was the second time tonight that Gario was hit and the fourth time, a batter of Pioniers got hit by a pitch. The HCAW-defense turned a 5-2-3 double play on a grounder by Dudley Leonora, but Shurman Marlin then delivered a 2-run single that made it a 13-3 score.

After scoring its last run in the third inning, HCAW left runners behind in scoring position in the next two innings. In the fourth, Dylan Koster singled with one out and moved on a wild pitch. Next batter Kevin Weijgertse then lined out to centerfield, where Mark Smit made a nice running catch. In the fifth, Jeandro Tromp singled with one out and Rachid Engelhardt singled with two outs, but the two stranded on second and third base. For Tromp, this also was his first basehit in the main-squad.

In the sixth inning, Luuk ter Beek retired the side. With one out in the seventh, Jeffrey Arends took over the pitching for Pioniers. The first baseman got a pop-up and closed the game with a strikeout.
