HCAW shuts out UVV to win fourth game
Nederlands

VLEUTEN (Neth.) - HCAW shutout Pickles UVV 4-0 on Saturday (April 22) to win its fourth game of the new season. Last Thursday, HCAW opened the 3-game series against UVV with a 7-1 win. The series closes on Sunday in Bussum.

The last time that HCAW started a season with four wins in its first five games was in 2007. Back then, the Bussum-squad opened with a 9-6 loss against Hoofddorp Pioniers, but then followed with an 8-7 win. Hereafter, HCAW won 2-1 and 8-4 against Sparta-Feyenoord and 10-9 vs. RCH.

UVV outhit HCAW 12-8, but was unable to score today. HCAW broke a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning with three runs.

Dylan Koster hit three of the eight HCAW-basehits, while Jelle Blaauw collected three hits for UVV.

In the meantime, it has become clear that HCAW-rookie Koen Werkman will be out for several weeks. Last Thursday, he made his first big league-start being the designated hitter. He singled in his first at bat, which was his first basehit at the highest level. Moments later, Werkman took off towards second base, but was caught stealing. During his sliding, he probably tripped on or near the base. After coming up, he reached for his right arm, walked from the field and left the game. In the clubhouse, he was looked after by two physical therapists and was then transported to a hospital for further examination. Initially, it was thought that Werkman had dislocated his shoulder, but that was not the case. Instead, HCAW confirmed that a fracture in his right scapula (shoulder blade) was diagnosed. It is not known yet how long he will be sidelined.

The first six innings of today's game remained scoreless. In these at bats, UVV collected ten basehits and HCAW four. UVV left seven runners behind, including three in scoring position, while HCAW stranded five, with two in scoring position. The HCAW-defense turned a double play in the first and third inning.

UVV-starter Jurjen van Zijl retired the side in the top of the first inning, then his teammates registered four basehits in the home half of the at bat, but were unable to score. Jelle Blaauw singled off of starter Kaj Timmermans, but a double play followed. Hereafter, Julian Goins and Sergino Martis both singled. Steven van Reem then connected for the fourth basehit, but the inning ended when Goins was eliminated at the plate trying to score on this hit.

Timmermans struckout the side in the second inning, then was supported with another double play in the third at bat.

In the fourth, Mike Bazuin and Rick Kuipers singled with two outs for UVV, but a force out followed. In the fifth, UVV left a runner at second base.

HCAW got its lone two runners in scoring position in the third inning. With one out, Dylan Koster singled and Roelie Henrique doubled, then a strikeout and flyout followed.

HCAW then broke the scoreless tie by scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning, two of which were unearned. Lead-off hitter Boyd Tuhumury reached on an error and stole second base. He then advanced when next batter Rachid Engelhardt flied out, but when a throwing error followed, Tuhumury scored. Hereafter, Seb Visser then walked and Dylan Koster singled. After Visser was replaced by pinch-runner Raoell Kortstam, who then scored on a single by Roelie Henrique. The bases got loaded when Delano Selassa also singled, which also led to a pitching change. Kevin van Veen took over, but saw Koster score the third run in the inning when Vince Rooi hit a sacrifice fly.

HCAW added an insurance run in the eighth. With two outs, Rachid Engelhardt (who had reached on a fielder's choice) was on first base. Hereafter, Raoell Kortstam doubled down the leftfield-line. Engelhardt appeared to be eliminated at the plate, but there, an error was made and so, HCAW led 4-0.

In the bottom of the eighth, Tim Niekerk took over the pitching from Kaj Timmermans for HCAW. He walked Sergino Martis with two outs, but he was left behind at first base. Oscar Meuris threw the ninth inning for the Bussum-squad. He gave up singles to Rick Kuipers and Berend Ruben with one out. The inning and the game ended when the HCAW-defense turned a double play.
