Amsterdam Pirates wins big against Twins
Nederlands
AMSTERDAM (Neth.) -
League-leader L&D Amsterdam Pirates recorded a big 11-0 win in 6½ inning on a cool Thursday-evening (June 22) against last-placed De Glaskoning Twins.
In the late afternoon, heavy thunderstorms with lightning traveled across the country.
Luckily, the showers were gone within an hour, the playing fields got much-needed water after some hot days and all games could be played as scheduled.
Despite losing tonight, Twins still has one theoretical chance of reaching the Championship Pool.
In order to to that, Twins has to win all its remaining games, while Hoofddorp Pioniers has to lose all its remaining games.
Also, Twins has to finish above both DSS and Pickles UVV.
When this happens, Twins and Pioniers will end up in a tie for fourth place.
When that happens, it means that Twins has swept Pioniers in the final 3-game series of the regular season.
In their first series, Twins won two of the three games.
And so, in this scenario, Twins will qualify based on the record in the head-to-head games played against Pioniers.
However, a Pioniers-win or Twins-loss in an upcoming game will mean elimination for Twins.
Amsterdam rallied for six runs in the third inning and collected ten basehits.
Gilmer Lampe homered and had four RBI's for Amsterdam.
Kevin Heijstek went the distance for Amsterdam.
He gave up eight basehits, but held Twins scoreless, as the Amsterdam-defense turned five double plays in the final five innings of the 7-inning game!
It is the second time that a team makes five double plays in one game this season.
On April 29, Curaçao Neptunus also turned five double plays against Twins, but that was a 9-inning game.
The last time that a team turned five double plays in one game before this season was on May 5, 2012 when HCAW made five in an 8-2 loss (!) against Amsterdam Pirates.
The last team that turned five double plays in seven innings was Sparta-Feyenoord, who did it on August 2, 2011 against ADO in a 14-0 win.
However, they didn't do it in five consecutive innings.
