Nederlands

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - League-leader L&D Amsterdam Pirates recorded a big 10-1 win against HCAW on Saturday-afternoon (July 22) in what was the final game in the impressive career of Umpire Fred van Groningen Schinkel.

Initially, Amsterdam led only 2-0 after five innings, but like Thursday-evening, that was enough. Leading 3-1 after six innings, Amsterdam added seven more runs in the seventh and eighth inning combined.

Amsterdam collected 14 basehits, including four by Danny Rombley and homeruns by Kenny Berkenbosch, Gilmer Lampe and Nick Urbanus.

Amsterdam opened the series on Thursday-evening with a 2-0 win. The series closes on Sunday in Bussum.

However, today's game belonged to veteran umpire Fred van Groningen Schinkel, who officiated in his last game. Van Groningen Schinkel started his umpiring career in the District The Hague in 1967 and climbed via several levels to the Dutch big league. On May 6, 1972, he made his debut in the highest league and this season was his 46th in the Dutch big league!

After making his umpiring debut on August 5, 1967, Van Groningen Schinkel went on to officiate in almost 2,700 games. This includes more than 1,200 regular season-games with others being games in Play-Offs, Play-Downs, Holland Series and International Games.

In his long and impressive career, Van Groningen Schinkel officiated in more than 80 international events after having become an international umpire in 1977. Since that year, he umpired in more than 80 international events, including the Olympic Games of 1996 (Atlanta, USA) and 2004 (Athens, Greece), the first World Baseball Classic in 2006, four World Championships, nine European Championships, 15 Haarlem Baseball Weeks, 11 World Port Tournaments and many more events.

Since 2005, Van Groningen Schinkel also is active as a Technical Commissioner during international events, organized by the European Baseball Confederation (CEB).

In 2010, Fred's son Stenar van Groningen Schinkel made his debut in the Dutch big league. Since then, father and son officiated several games together. They also were on the field together today with Stenar being the Home Plate Umpire. For today's game, Van Groningen Schinkel was given the opportunity to compile and invite the crew of game-officials. Besides his son, the 3-man umpiring crew was completed with Peter Brink, while veteran scorers Marco Stoovelaar and Francis Speters were invited to be the Official Scorers and Willem Broertjes as the Technical Commissioner. Van Groningen Schinkel's wife Marion, their other son and daughter and their grandchildren and other family-members also were on hand today to witness this special and memorable game that ended a era in the umpiring history of Dutch baseball.

After the game, players, coaches and staff-members all lined up, as Van Groningen Schinkel was honored. Bart Volkerijk, the Executive Director of the Royal Netherlands Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB) addressed Van Groningen Schinkel. He brought back memories, as he himself had played many games as pitcher of ADO and with the Netherlands Team with Van Groningen Schinkel being an umpire. Volkerijk announced that Van Groningen Schinkel was named Honorary Member of the KNBSB, while his number 7 was to be retired, which is a first for umpires. Van Groningen Schinkel also received a framed shirt he wore during the first World Baseball Classic in 2006. On behalf of Amsterdam Pirates, he was handed a specially made trophy to honor his long career. HCAW also had a gift for the retiring umpire, as were many other who were in attendance today.

Before the game and during the first three innings of the game, a camera-crew interviewed and followed Van Groningen Schinkel. Director of the TV-crew was wellknown award-winning Dutch documentary-maker Michiel van Erp, who is working on a new project for television. At the moment, this documentary is scheduled for broadcast on December 7.

In 2006, Van Erp made the feature film documentary Pretpark Nederland and in 2014, he was the director of the successful television-series 'Ramses', which won the Golden Calf, the Silver Nipkowschijf and the Prix Europa, amongst other awards. For this series, Van Erp won the DDG Award, the annual award for Best Directing from the Dutch Directors Guild. Through the years, Van Erp made many interesting documentaries, including portraits of His Royal Highness Prince Claus, former Queen Beatrix, writer Connie Palmen and actress Sylvia Kristel. But he also made many documentaries focusing on human interest items.

Complete schedule

Amsterdam Pirates opened the score with one run in the bottom of the second inning off of starter Kaj Timmermans when Kenny Berkenbosch led off with a homerun. Hereafter, Danny Rombley singled and was able to move to second base when an error followed. With two outs, it appeared that Amsterdam was taking some more distance, but only one run was added, as a baserunning-blunder ended the inning. Rombley moved to third base when Max Clarijs reached on an error, then scored on a single by Remco Draijer. With Clarijs on second base and Draijer on first, Zerzinho Croes hit the ball towards short stop Roelie Henrique, who was unable to make a play. With that, Croes reached on an infield-hit. However, Clarijs kept on running after having reached third base and was simply eliminated to end the inning.

Amsterdam-starter Kevin Heijstek encountered not much problems in the first five innings. In the top of the first inning, the righthander gave up an one-out double to Roelie Henrique. He moved on a grounder, but Heijstek closed with a strikeout and then retired the side in the next three innings.

Trailing 2-0, HCAW got the bases loaded in the fifth inning, but was unable to score. Rachid Engelhardt singled and Rowan van Hoek reached on a bad-hop infield-hit, then both advanced on a pick-off throwing error by catcher Max Clarijs. With runners on second and third base, Seb Visser lined out to second baseman Nick Urbanus. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Kevin Weijgertse walked, but Heijstek followed with a strikeout and a grounder ended the at bat.

HCAW cut the deficit in half in the sixth inning. With one out, Kevin Dirksen doubled and scored on a 2-out single by Rachid Engelhardt. But that was to be HCAW's lone run in this game.

After the single by Engelhardt, the next (and last) ten batters were retired in order. The first four by Heijstek, then Dennis Burgersdijk and Nick Veltkamp retired the side the eighth and ninth inning.

Amsterdam got the run back in the bottom of the sixth inning when Gilmer Lampe homered with one out.

In the next two innings, the home team added seven more runs to lift the lead to 10-1.

In the seventh, Moreno Vork took over the HCAW-pitching. With two outs, he gave up a double to Remco Draijer, then hit next batter Zerzinho Croes with a pitch. Nick Urbanus followed with a homerun to make it a 6-1 score.

In the eighth, Tim Niekerk pitched for HCAW and gave up four more runs. With one out, Danny Rombley hit his fourth single in the game, then Linoy Croes walked. The two moved on a double by Jesse Aussems. Rombley scored and Croes reached third base, but he was replaced their out of precaution due to a slight injury. Norbert Jongerius took over as pinch-runner and both he and Aussems scored with two outs when Remco Draijer reached on an error, which lifted the lead to 9-1. Zerzinho Croes followed with another single and Nick Urbanus then delivered a runscoring single that made it a 10-1 score. With that, only one run was needed to end the game via the mercy-rule, but a strikeout ended the at bat.

In the top of the ninth inning, Nick Veltkamp closed the game for Amsterdam. As mentioned, the lefthander retired the side. And it was only fitting that the final out of the inning and the game was called by retiring umpire Fred van Groningen Schinkel.
