Netherlands Cadets empty-handed in European Championship-Final
Nederlands

WIENER NEUSTADT / ROHRBACH IN OBERÖSTERREICH (Austria) - The Netherlands Cadets Team was left empty-handed in the all-deciding Final of the Under-15 European Championship Cadets on Sunday (July 23) and had to settle for the Silver Medal. The Orange-squad was undefeated, but in the Final lost 4-2 to Germany, which captured its second European title. Germany won its first in 2015, then finished third a year ago. The Netherlands won the title in 2014, but then didn't participate in the Championship in 2015 and 2016.

The Czech Republic, which was dethroned as European champion on Saturday by Germany, won the Bronze Medal by winning 11-8 against France. In this game for third and fourth place, both Dutch umpires in this event were assigned. Roy van de Wateringen was behind the plate and Efrem Silvania was at first base. Completing the 3-man crew was Edgaras Matesevicius from Lithuania.

Netherlands Team-pitcher Chris Stuart, who pitched a great game in the Semi-Final, won the award for Best Pitcher. Daniele Di Monte (Italy) was the Best Hitter and Julius Reusse (Germany) was named Most Valuable Player.

Final Standings:
1. Germany, 2. Netherlands, 3. Czech Republic, 4. France, 5. Italy, 6. Austria, 7. Spain, 8. Russia, 9. Poland, 10. Lithuania.

Netherlands vs. Germany (Final)

It was the Netherlands that opened the score in the third inning, but the score was tied at 2-2 after five at bats. Germany then turned the game its way in the sixth inning en route to the title.

The Orange got two runners on base in the bottom of the first inning. German starter Julius Reusse struckout the first two batters he faced, but then walked Emile Haswell and hit Chris Stuart with a pitch. The two were left behind when a flyout ended the at bat.

In the second inning, three batters were struckout by Reusse. The pitcher had a good outing for Gemany, but faced a deficit and became the winning pitcher thanks to two runs in the sixth. Reusse, who earlier was the losing pitcher against Spain, was named Most Valuable Player for his performance in the Final. German catcher Yannic Walther, who led the team with a .550 batting average before the Final (5th best in the tournament) and led the event with 11 basehits and 11 runs batted in, batted 0-for-4 in the Final.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Netherlands scored its first run. Luca Pastor led off with a walk and moved on a grounder. With two outs, he scored on a single by Emile Haswell. Hereafter, Chris Stuart also singled, but he and Haswell were left behind again. Stuart led the Dutch Team with a .467 batting average and shared the lead in RBI's with Jesse Velders, as both had eight. Haswell led the team with 10 runs scored.

Netherlands-starter Nick Boxelaar did very well, threw four strong innings and didn't allow a German batter to reach base. His Perfect Game ended with one out in the top of the fifth inning when Luca Rammelmann homered. This was the first homerun Germany hit during the event. Hereafter, Germany got some more baserunners and took a 2-1 lead. With two outs, Benedikt Schäffer reached on an error, moved on a wild pitch, then reached third base on another error. He then scored when a balk was called. When another single followed, Boxelaar was relieved by Kyshon Giterson. He began with a walk that loaded the bases, but a force out ended the inning.

The Netherlands came alongside immediately in its fifth at bat. Luca Pastor again led off with a walk. He got into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Raydley Legito, then moved to third base on a wild pitch. With two outs, Pastor scored when Reusse threw another wild pitch to make it a 2-2 score.

Germany then turned the game its way in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs when the Dutch defense committed two errors. Felix Thierolf led off with a single and Simon Bäumer followed with a double. When the ball was thrown back to the infield after the double, an error was made, which enabled Thierolf to score the go-ahead run. That also led to a pitching change, as Jelle van der Lelie took over. He gave up a single to Luca Rammelmann, which gave Germany runners on first and third base. Rammelmann then stole second base and when a throwing error followed, Bäumer scored another German run and made it a 4-2 score.

Germany got a chance to add another run in the seventh when it got the bases loaded with one out, without hitting a basehit. Van der Lelie walked the lead-off hitter, then issued another walk with one out. The two runners moved on a wild pitch, then a force play was created via an intentional walk that loaded the bases. The force play indeed came, as a double play ended the at bat.

The Netherlands got one final chance in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Jason Netten walked, which led to a pitching change. Starter Julius Reusse was relieved by Simon Bäumer, who began with a strikeout. He then gave up a single to Raydley Legito, but two Orange-runners were left behind when a grounder ender the inning, the game and the tournament.
