Amsterdam Pirates comes from behind to win against Neptunus
Nederlands

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates was victorious on Saturday (September 23) in a game that didn't really matter, coming from behind to win 6-4 against Curaçao Neptunus. Both teams already clinched a spot in the Holland Series a week ago and Neptunus claimed first place on Thursday-evening by winning 6-5. The 3-game series ends on Sunday in Amsterdam.

Therefore, Neptunus and Amsterdam used today's game (and Sunday's) as an exhibition game to prepare for the Holland Series-opener coming Thursday-evening (September 28) in Rotterdam.

Both teams used two of their regular starters today, as Rob Cordemans and Kevin Heijstek pitched for Amsterdam, while Diegomar Markwell and Orlando Yntema threw for Neptunus. Both starters were throwing on a pitch-count of respectively 40 and 50 and were relieved after that. Cordemans and Markwell will be the starters coming Thursday in the opener of the Holland Series. Heijstek and Yntema took over after respectively two and three innings. They are the expected starters in Game 2 next Saturday in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam scored the deciding two runs in the top of the ninth inning off of closer Loek van Mil, who then gave up three basehits.

Neptunus outhit Amsterdam 13-11, including four hits by Shaldimar Daantji. Nick Urbanus hit three hits for Amstrdam.

Complete schedule

Diegomar Markwell and Rob Cordemans, the scheduled starters for Thursday's Holland Series-opener, both gave up no runs today during their brief stay on the mound. Markwell got five baserunners in the three-plus innings he threw, while Cordemans allowed two batters to reach in his two innings.

In the top of the first inning, Markwell walked lead-off hitter Remco Draijer, then gave up an one-out double to Nick Urbanus. The two stranded on second and third base when a strikeout and groundout followed. With two outs in the second inning, Max Clarijs singled for Amsterdam, but was left behind on first base. In the third, Zerzinho Croes singled with one out, but also stranded on first base. Markwell walked lead-off hitter Kenny Berkenbosch in the top of the fourth inning, then was relieved by Orlando Yntema after having thrown 51 pitches.

Cordemans gave up a 2-out single to Gianison Boekhoudt in the first inning, but closed with a strikeout. In the second at bat, the righthander gave up an one-out single to Shaldimar Daantji, then a strikeout and flyout followed. As Cordemans had thrown 35 pitches, he was relieved in the third inning by Kevin Heijstek.

After Markwell had walked Berkenbosch in the fourth inning, Yntema took over and struckout the first batter he faced. He then hit next batter Rashid Gerard with a pitch, but followed with two more strikeouts.

Neptunus opened the score in the bottom of the fourth inning off of Heijstek. With one out, Daniel Fernandes and Shaldimar Daantji singled and Ruar Verkerk followed with a runscoring single. Hereafter, the second run was scored when Ruendrick Piternella reached on an error. Piternella today played in his first game of the season for the main-squad after having been with the team as a back-up player during several previous games.

Amsterdam Pirates got one run back in the fifth. With one out, Orlando Yntema got the bases loaded when Zerzinho Croes, Nick Urbanus and Gilmer Lampe all singled. A sacrifice fly by Kenny Berkenbosch then accounted for the run, but Yntema closed with another strikeout.

Neptunus added two more runs with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Gregory Muller led off with a single off of Kevin Heijstek, who followed with a strikeout. Muller was then forced out on a grounder by Dwayne Kemp, who was awarded second base on a balk, then scored on a double by Daniel Fernandes. The latter then also scored when Shaldimar Daantji delivered a runscoring single.

Just as in the opener on Thursday, Neptunus was held scoreless in the final four at bats of the game. Heijstek retired the side in the sixth and saw Neptunus leave a runner on second base in the seventh. Dennis Burgersdijk took over in the eighth. He gave up a lead-off infield-hit to Shaldimar Daantji, but then was supported with a double play and went on to become the winning pitcher.

Trailing 4-1, Amsterdam scored twice in the top of the sixth inning, despite hitting no basehits, but four hitters walked. Orlando Yntema walked Rashid Gerard and Max Clarijs, but then struckout pinch-hitter Jesse Aussems. Hereafter, the righthander was relieved by Jan Tomek, but the Czech got the bases loaded when he walked Remco Draijer. Another walked followed, this time for Zerzinho Croes, resulting in an automatic run. Tomek then made a fielding error on a comeback-grounder by Nick Urbanus, which led to the next run and kept the bases loaded. Hereafter, a wild pitch followed. All runners moved, but Draijer was eliminated at the plate trying to score on this pitch. A flyout ended the at bat, but the score was now 4-3.

Amsterdam came alongside in the top of the seventh inning. Kenny Berkenbosch led off with a walk, moved to third base on a single by Linoy Croes, then scored the tying run on a squeeze/sacrifice bunt by Rashid Gerard.

With the score now at 4-4, Berry van Driel took the mound for Neptunus in the eighth inning. With two outs, he gave up an infield-hit to Nick Urbanus, but he was forced out moments later.

In the top of the ninth inning, Amsterdam struck with two runs off of closer Loek van Mil to turn the game its way. Kenny Berkenbosch led off with a single and scored the go-ahead run all the way from first base on a double by Linoy Croes. Hereafter, Rashid Gerard also singled to put runners at the corners, but Van Mil followed with a strikeout. After Gerard had advanced on a wild pitch, Croes scored the next run on a sacrifice fly by Jesse Aussems to make it a 6-4 score.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Neptunus got its first two batters on base off of Dennis Burgersdijk, as Jochem Koedijk and Stijn van der Meer began with singles. However, they stranded on first and second base, as the next three batters were retired to end the game.
