Hoofddorp Pioniers defeats HCAW in ninth inning with comeback
Nederlands

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Hoofddorp Pioniers was victorious on Saturday (September 23) against HCAW in a game that didn't really matter anymore. After winning big with a 13-3 score in seven innings in the opener on Thursday, Pioniers today won only 10-9 after trailing when the bottom of the ninth inning began. The series and the season for these two teams ends on Sunday in Bussum. Their series is of no importance, as both teams were eliminated last weekend.

HCAW trailed 6-0 after seven innings, then rallied for six runs in the eighth and added three in the ninth to take a 9-6 lead. But in the bottom of the ninth, Pioniers scored four runs to win the game.

Pioniers collected 15 basehits, including three by Shurman Marlin, who homered as did Mervin Garo. Raoell Kortstam homered for HCAW, while rookie Jeandro Tromp hit three basehits for the Bussum-squad.

Two position players were the pitchers-of-record, as first baseman Jeffrey Arends was the winning pitcher, while third baseman Seb Visser was the losing pitcher.

(September 23)

Complete schedule

After leaving a runner behind on first base in the bottom of the first inning, Hoofddorp Pioniers scored its first run in the second at bat. Shurman Marlin and Gianni Frolijk led off with singles off of starter Kaj Timmermans, who followed with a strikeout. Hereafter, Frolijk was forced out on a grounder by Joey Eeman, which brought Marlin to third base. A double-steal situation followed with Eeman reaching second base, while Marlin scored. Eeman moved to third base on an infield-hit by Duco Nuijten, but the inning ended when the latter was picked off first base by Timmermans.

Pioniers got into scoring position again in the fourth. Shurman Marlin then again led off with a basehit, this time a double, and moved to third base on a wild pitch. He stranded there, as Timmermans retired the next three hitters, two of them with a strikeout.

Pioniers added two runs in the fifth inning off of new pitcher Leon Elshof, who made his first pitching appearance in the main-squad since August 9, 2015 when he threw one inning in relief against DSS. This season, Elshof had been the closer in the third team of HCAW. At the same moment, another HCAW-pitcher entered the game, as Tim Niekerk took over in rightfield. With one out, Mark Smit singled and scored when Mervin Gario followed with his third homerun in the Championship Pool to make it a 3-0 score.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Pioniers scored three runs on three hits and two errors off of Elshof to double their lead. Mark Smit led with a walk, then pinch-hitter Jeffrey Arends singled and Max Draijer followed with a runscoring single. With Draijer on first base and Arends on second base, Dudley Leonora delivered an RBI-double. That brought in Arends, while Draijer moved to third base. On the throw from leftfield to the plate, Leonora tried to advance to second base, but was eliminated there. That was followed by a throwing error, which enabled Draijer to score from third base and make it a 6-0 score.

Pioniers-starter Chris Pfau had a strong outing and was pitching a No-Hitter for six innings! But he ended up with a no-decision! In the first six innings, the lefthander allowed only two hitters to reach base. With one out in the second, he walked Dalvin Kortstam and in the fourth, he also walked Seb Visser with one out. Kortstam stranded on first base, while Visser was elimimated in a double play.

With a 6-0 lead, Pfau's No-Hitter ended in the top of the seventh inning when rookie Jeandro Tromp led off with a single. Moments later, Tromp was eliminated when Seb Visser grounded into a double play, then Pfay closed with a strikeout.

In the top of the eighth inning, Pfau also lost his ShutOut. Besides that, HCAW rallied for six runs on four pitchers to come alongside! HCAW recorded only two hits in the inning, while the Pioniers-defense committed two errors. With one out, Pfau walked Tim Niekerk, who then reached second (and third) base safely when a throwing error was made on a force play-grounder by Arthur Lugtmeijer, who ended up on second base. Lugtmeijer missed most of the season due to a broken wrist, but today played eight innings on first base in the game. Both scored when Raoell Kortstam followed with a 3-run homerun, which cut HCAW's deficit in half. Pfau was then relieved by Glenn Wassink, but he walked Diamond Silberie and Delano Selassa, then gave up an RBI-double to Jeandro Tromp. Another pitching change followed, as Taylor Clemensia took over, but he also ran into problems. The lefthander walked Seb Visser, which loaded the bases. An error on a grounder by Rossini Frolijk then produced a run and kept the bases loaded. Clemensia then struckout the next batter, but then walked pinch-hitter Kevin Dirksen, which brought in the tying run. Hereafter, Darryl Jamoena became the fourth pitcher and he finally ended the long at bat with a strikeout.

With the score now at 6-6, HCAW also changed pitchers, as third baseman Seb Visser took over from Leon Elshof. With two outs, he walked Mark Smit, who stole second base, but stranded when Visser struckout Jeffrey Arends, who would become the winning pitcher.

In the top of the ninth inning, HCAW scored three runs to take a 9-6 lead! Lead-off hitter Raoell Kortstam reached on an error and with one out, the bases got loaded when Jamoena gave up singles to Delano Selassa and Jeandro Tromp. HCAW then took the lead when Jamoena walked Seb Visser, who with this became the pitcher-of-record for the win. HCAW added two more runs when next hitter Dylan Koster delivered a 2-run single. Selassa and Tromp scored, but Visser was eliminated trying to advance to third base. The bases got loaded again hereafter when Dalvin Kortstam reached on an infield-hit and Kevin Dirksen walked. Pioniers then again changed pitchers and designated hitter Jeffrey Arends became the fifth pitcher for the team this afternoon. He got a force play-grounder from Arthur Lugtmeijer that ended the inning.

With a 9-6 lead, HCAW now had a chance to win this game. Despite having a 3-run lead, it was not opted to bring in a real pitcher to close the game, but infielder Seb Visser returned to the mound instead. That decision backfired. Pioniers reacted with three basehits, the HCAW-defense committed two errors and four runs were scored to give the home team the win after all.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Dudley Leonora reached second base on an error, then Shurman Marlin homered to make it a 9-8 score! Next batter Oliver van der Wijst Severino then reached on the next error and the bases got loaded when Visser walked Sander Paap and gave up a single to Joey Eeman. Duco Nuijten followed with another basehit to bring in the tying run. With the bases still loaded, Mark Smit hit a walk-off sacrifice fly that brought in Paap with the winning run and ended the game!
