AMSTERDAM (Neth.) -
The baseball-team of L&D Amsterdam Pirates is one of the teams that has been nominated for the title Sports Team of the Year for the upcoming Sports Elections Nieuw-West.
Sports Team of the Year is one of eight categories during the event, which is organized by Amsterdam Nieuw-West, one of the boroughs of Amsterdam.
Amsterdam Nieuw-West is the borough that comprises the most western neighborhoods and was created in 2010 after a merger of the former boroughs Osdorp, Geuzenveld-Slotermeer and Slotervaart.
The home site of baseball- and softball-club Amsterdam Pirates is located in Osdorp.
The awards will be handed out on Thursday, February 2.
The nominees for the eight categories were announced on Tuesday (January 24).
The Sports Advice Committee of the Nieuw-West borough selected the nominees for the proposed candidates.
Tjerk Vellinga, the Chairman of the Sports Committee, will open the awards-evening.
The eight categories are Sports Talent Male, Sports Talent Female, Sports Volunteers, Sports Coach, Sports Team Youth, Sports Team Seniors, Sports Female Athlete and Sports Male Athlete of the Year.
L&D Amsterdam Pirates is one of four teams nominated for Sports Team of the Year 2016 in the seniors-category.
The others are Amsterdam Crusaders (American Football), GTV De Badhoeve (rhythmic gymnastics) and De Dolfijn Combo (synchronized swimming).

Last year, the baseball-team of Amsterdam Pirates captured the European Champions Cup in Italy for the first time in club-history.
In the ECC-Final, Amsterdam won 5-4 in ten innings in a 4-hour thriller against Pirati dei Rimini (Italy).
En route to the final, Pirates eliminated and dethroned Curaçao Neptunus, which ended up in fourth place in the tournament.
Pirates also reached the Holland Series, the Championship Final for the national baseball-title.
In the best-of-seven Championship Final, Amsterdam lost in six games to Neptunus (4-2) in a very attractive and suspenseful Holland Series.
Amsterdam Crusaders won its second consecutive Dutch Championship-title last year with a convincing 40-6 score in the Tulip Bowl against 010 Trojans (former Rotterdam Trojans).
Like the baseball-final, this also was a confrontation between Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
While Crusaders won the national title, the team lost the European Final, the EFL Bowl, to Frankfurt Universe (Germany), 35-21.
The seniors of De Badhoeve won the Dutch Championship-title last year in the hoop-exercise, while De Dolfijn Combo-team was the best in the National Championship Free Combination.
