Amsterdam Pirates shuts out Neptunus in final game Championship Pool

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates closed the Championship Pool on Sunday (September 24) with a 5-0 shutout against Curaçao Neptunus. Coming Thursday (September 28), Amsterdam Pirates and Neptunus will open the best-of-seven Holland Series with the first game in Rotterdam.

Amsterdam Pirates outhit Neptunus 11-6, including two homeruns by Kalian Sams. He made his comeback in the Amsterdam-squad after returning recently from Canada, where he had closed his professional season. Remco Draijer, Rashid Gerard and Jesse Aussems all had two basehits for Amsterdam.

Neptunus collected only six basehits off of three pitchers, including two by Stijn van der Meer.

Amsterdam Pirates opened the 3-game series against Neptunus with a 6-5 loss, then won the second game on Saturday with a 6-4 score.

Amsterdam-starter Robin Schel gave up only three hits to Neptunus in the six inning he pitched. In the first inning, the lefthander walked Gregory Muller with one out, but the Amsterdam-defense followed with a double play. After retiring the side in the second inning (two strikeouts), Schel gave up two hits in the third at bat. With one out, Ruendrick Piternella hit his first basehit while playing for the main-squad, then Jochem Koedijk followed with a bunt-single. Hereafter, Pirates turned another inning-ending double play.

Neptunus turned a double play in the bottom of the first inning after Remco Draijer had led off with an infield-hit. After leaving a runner behind on first base in the second inning, the home team opened the score in the third off of starter Kevin Kelly. Rashid Gerard led off with a double, moved on a grounder by Jesse Aussems and scored on a double by Remco Draijer.

Schel retired the side again in the top of the fourth, then Amsterdam added two runs in its fourth at bat. Kalian Sams led off with a homerun in his second at bat in the game. Hereafter, Gilmer Lampe reached on an infield-hit, stole second base and moved to third base when Kenny Berkenbosch reached on a throwing error. Danny Rombley then grounded towards third base where Lampe was eliminated. After an infield-fly accounted for the second out, Jesse Aussems singled to bring in Berkenbosch and make it a 3-0 score.

Sams had returned home some days before after completing his professional season in Canada. There, he won the title in the (independent) CanAm League with Les Capitales de Québec. In the best-of-five Championship Final, Québec swept Rockland Boulders in three games. This was the team's seventh title, but the first since 2013. In the second game, Sams was 4-for-4 with two homeruns, batted in five runs and stole two bases.

Neptunus was retired in order for the third time in the fifth inning. With two outs in the sixth, Stijn van der Meer singled to register only the third basehit for the squad. He stranded on first base.

In the bottom of the sixth, Amsterdam left a runner behind in scoring position. With one out, Rashid Gerard singled and moved on a grounder. Remco Draijer then walked, but the two runners were left behind.

Daan Hendrix took over the Amsterdam-pitching in the top of the seventh inning. He gave up a 2-out single to Daniel Fernandes, but he also didn't went beyond first base. Hendrix retired the side in the eighth.

Neptunus also went to the bullpen in the seventh, as Misja Harcksen took over from Kevin Kelly. With one out, he gave up the second homerun in the game by Kalian Sams, which made it a 4-0 score. With two outs, Patrick Bok doubled, but Harcksen then closed with a strikeout.

Pirates added another run in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Jesse Aussems singled and Remco Draijer walked. When the latter was forced out, Aussems moved to third base and he later scored on a wild pitch.

Lefthander Kyle Ward closed the game for Amsterdam. He gave up a lead-off single to Stijn van der Meer, then Dwayne Kemp singled with two outs. With runners on first and third base, Ward completed the Amsterdam-shutout, as the game ended with a pop-up.
