HCAW closes season with mercy-rule win against Hoofddorp Pioniers
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - HCAW closed the Championship Pool and its season on Sunday (September 24) with a big 11-1 score in eight innings against Hoofddorp Pioniers. The 3-game series began on Thursday with a 13-3 mercy-rule victory for Pioniers, which then won 10-9 on Saturday.

HCAW collected 14 basehits, including five by Delano Selassa, who scored three runs and batted in four. Seb Visser and Kevin Weijgertse both had three basehits. Pioniers hit only four basehits, two of them by Dudley Leonora.

Both teams made multiple defensive changes in today's game. With that, HCAW and Pioniers continued a tradition, as they have used many players and made many changes in earlier final games of their season. That includes pitchers playing in either the infield or outfield or giving them at bats, but also position-players taking the mound or playing on unfamiliar postions.

(September 24)

Complete schedule

HCAW trailed 1-0 halfway the third inning and then scored two runs. The team led only 3-1 halfway the seventh inning, but then added eight more runs in two at bats to register a big 11-1, mercy-rule victory.

While HCAW collected 14 basehits, the Pioniers-defense contributed with five errors, which accounted for eight (!) unearned runs. On September 3, HCAW also recorded a big 15-8 win against Pioniers, which then also made five defensive errors.

In today's game, there were multiple changes. Pioniers made 11 defensive and three offensive changes, while HCAW made 12 defensive and 3 offensive changes. Pioniers, which didn't announced its changes to the umpires and official scores, even made an illegal re-entry chance, which wasn't noted by HCAW until after the game. Pioniers used three position-players as pitcher, HCAW used one. Pioniers used three pitchers on other positions (Nick Keur 1B, Glenn Wassink LF, Luuk ter Beek RF) and another one as pinch-hitter (Darryl Jamoena). HCAW used three pitchers in other postions. Tim Niekerk entered as pinch-runner, then played in centerfield, Ian Delemarre began the game as designated hitter and took over over the pitching. Sedley Karel played in leftfield. It was reported that both teams didn't take the game serious and sometimes were booed by the spectators for making these many changes.

Pioniers opened the score in the top of the first inning off of starter Jim Ploeger. The lefthander walked lead-off hitter Mark Smit, but he was forced out on second base on a grounder by Max Draijer. With two outs, Ploeger also walked Jeffrey Arends and Dudley Leonora followed with a runscoring single. This would be the lone run Hoofddorp scored this afternoon.

Ploeger retired the side in the next two innings, then Ian Delemarre took over in the fourth inning and went on to become the winning pitcher.

Lars Huijer started for Pioniers and threw two scoreless innings. He gave up a lead-off single in the first inning to Delano Selassa, but he was later eliminated in an inning-ending double play. The righthander retired the side in the second inning.

Dion Steijl took over the Pioniers-pitching in the third inning and gave up two unearned runs. With two outs, Boyd Tuhumury reached second base on a throwing error, then scored the tying run on a single by Delano Selassa. Hereafter, Roelie Henrique followed with an RBI-double to give HCAW a 2-1 lead.

Pioniers got its next runner in scoring position in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Mark Smit walked and Mervin Gario singled, but they were left behind.

HCAW then added another run in the bottom of the fifth. Kevin Weijgertse led off with a single, but he was forced out on a grounder by Ian Delemarre, who had started the game as designated hitter. Delemarre, who now was in the game as pitcher, advanced on a passed ball, then scored on a 2-out single by Delano Selassa.

In the sixth inning, Pioniers left another runner behind in scoring position. Dudley Leonora then singled with one out and his pinch-runner Duco Nuijten moved on a grounder to second base, but then stranded.

In the bottom of the sixth, it was HCAW that stranded a runner on second off of new pitcher Glenn Bakker, who is an outfielder and back-up catcher. He gave up an one-out single to Seb Visser, who moved on a passed ball, but was left behind.

Pioniers got three baserunners in the top of the seventh inning off of new pitcher Giovanni Tensen, but none of them got beyond first base. With one out, Tensen hit pinch-hitter (and pitcher) Darryl Jamoena with a pitch, but he was forced out on a grounder by Mark Smit. The latter was then also forced out on a following grounder by Mervin Gario, who was left behind on first base.

It was hereafter that Pioniers made an illegal substitute. In the bottom of the sixth inning, first baseman Jeffrey Arends (who batted fourth) took over the catching, while catcher Joey Eeman (who batted ninth) was replaced by Brennan Nijhof, who became the new first baseman. Duco Nuijten, who had entered the game in the top of the sixth as pinch-runner for Dudley Leonora became the new short stop. In the top of the seventh inning, Darryl Jamoena was inserted as pinch-hitter for Nijhof (who was the new ninth hitter). In the bottom of the seventh, Jamoena was replaced by Nick Keur, who took over at first base for Nijhof. At the same time, Nijhof (who was replaced by Jamoena) re-entered the game as the new second baseman, taking over from Oliver van der Wijst Severino (who batted seventh)!

In the bottom of the seventh inning, HCAW took more distance by scoring two (earned) runs off of Gianni Frolijk, who is an infielder. Frolijk, who last season played for HCAW, gave up a lead-off double to Kevin Weijgertse, but retired the next two batters. Hereafter, Delano Selassa delivered a runscoring double and went on to score himself on a single by Tim Niekerk to make it a 5-1 score.

Pioniers got a chance to do some scoring in the top of the eighth inning off of (outfielder) Kevin Dirksen, but left three runners behind. Like Frolijk in the seventh, Dirksen also threw against his former teammates, as he played for Pioniers last year. With two outs, Duco Nuijten reached on an error, then (pitcher, but now leftfielder) Glenn Wassink singled. The bases got loaded when Dirksen hit Brennan Nijhof with a pitch, who had re-entered and now was batting in seventh position. The three runners were left behind when pinch-hitter Luuk ter Beek (also a pitcher) flied out.

HCAW then reached the 10-run difference in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring six runs. In this at bat, the Pioniers-defense committed four errors, resulting in five unearned runs. Seb Visser led off with a single, then scored when hit his was followed by two errors. Hereafter, designated hitter Mervin Gario (who is a third baseman) took over the pitching for Pioniers. With one out, he saw Dylan Koster reached on another error, then gave up a single to Kevin Weijgertse. Next hitter Vince Rooi also singled, which was followed by an outfield-error, resulting in another run. Gario then struckout (pitcher, now leftfielder) Sedley Karel, but hereafter, he gave up a runscoring single by Delano Selassa, which was his fifth basehit in this game. The bases got loaded when Tim Niekerk walked. A wild pitch then accounted for the next run and the bases were re-loaded when Kevin Dirksen walked. After Rowan van Hoek had entered the game as pinch-runner for Dirksen, the game ended when Seb Visser hit a 2-run single, which made it an 11-1 score. For Van Hoek, this was the first game he played for HCAW in the Championship Pool. The catcher had been sidelined after returning home with a injury from the Under-23 European Championship in the Czech Republic last month.
