Twins wins on walk-off walk against Pioniers
Nederlands

OOSTERHOUT (Neth.) - De Glaskoning Twins took an early minimal lead on a sunny Thursday-afternoon (May 25) against Hoofddorp Pioniers, but that wasn't enough. Pioniers came alongside, but in the end, Twins registered its second win of the season thanks to a walk-off walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to win 2-1. The 3-game series continues on Saturday in Hoofddorp.

Last Saturday, Twins ended a 13-game losing streak by winning its first game of the season, winning 9-7 vs. HCAW. On Sunday, Pioniers came from behind to win 3-1 and end an 8-game winning streak of L&D Amsterdam Pirates.

Pioniers outhit Twins 7-6, but was unable to do much scoring today, as the team was limited to only one run. As that was not enough to support starting pitcher Lars Huijer, who had a good outing and struckout 14 batters in seven innings, while giving up only four hits. The last pitcher to strikeout 14 batters in one game was American Will Dismukes, who did it while pitching for Neptunus against UVV on June 26, 2014. The last Dutch pitcher with 14 or more strikeouts was Rob Cordemans, who struckout 18 batters on May 12, 2011, pitching for Amsterdam Pirates against Sparta-Feyenoord. In that game, Cordemans struckout seven consecutive batters. Huijer today struckout six batters in a row.

The team from Hoofddorp got several scoring opportunities, but in the fifth and sixth, Twins ended with a double play and in the eighth, three runners were left behind.

Twins also got the bases loaded, which happened in the ninth, and then did score thanks to a costly walk that ended the game.

Twins' first baseman Jamie Verheyleweghen walked four times in today's game. On April 16, Vince Rooi of HCAW became the first batter to walk four times in one game this season. The opponent back then also was Pioniers.

Complete schedule

Pioniers got its first chance to open the score in the top of the first inning off of starter Reynaldo Sarmiento Claro. With one out, Max Draijer reached on an error and moved to third base on a 2-out single by Jeffrey Arends, but a grounder ended the at bat.

Then it was Twins that got the opportunity to score the first run in the bottom of the first off of starter Lars Huijer. The righthander walked lead-off hitter Jamie Verheyleweghen and gave up a single to Bram Grooten. Hereafter, Huijer struckout the next two batters and a grounder also ended this at bat.

Pioniers got another runner on third base in its second inning. With one out, Gianni Frolijk singled, was awarded second base on a balk and moved on an infield-hit by Mark Smit. The inning ended with a double play.

Lars Huijer retired the side in the second inning, but then gave up a lead-off homerun to Bart Janssen (his first at the big league-level) in the bottom of the third inning. In the same at bat, Twins failed to add another run despite getting two runners into scoring position. After Janssen's homerun, Jamie Verheyleweghen walked and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Bram Grooten. He then moved to third base on a single by Dennis De Quint, who stole second base. The two were left behind when Huijer closed with two strikeouts.

In the bottom of the fourth, Twins got another runner on second base and Huijer again closed with two strikeouts.

Pioniers then got into scoring position again in the top of the fifth. Gianni Frolijk led off with a single and advanced on a wild pitch. With one out, Duco Nuijten walked, but the Twins-defense then turned an inning-ending double play.

Pioniers also made a double play in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Bram Grooten walked and Dennis De Quint singled. While next batter Melvin Perdue struckout, a double-steal was executed. On the throw from the catcher, Perdue interfered and De Quint was called out and caught stealing to complete the double play and end the inning.

In the top of the sixth, Pioniers managed to score a run to come alongside. Max Draijer led off with a single, moved to second on a grounder, then reached third base when Twins-starter Sarmiento again committed a balk. Moments later, Draijer scored the tying run on a single by Jeffrey Arends, who last season was the leading hitter of Twins. Sarmiento now leads the league with three balks. After giving up the single to Arends, Sarmiento was relieved by Jan Evertse, who got a double play-grounder from Shurman Marlin on his first delivery to end the inning.

After closing the fifth with a strikeout, Lars Huijer continued his strong outing in the bottom of the sixth, as he struckout the side. The righthander also struckout the first two batters in the seventh, meaning he struckout six consecutive batters. With two outs int he seventh, Huijer walked Jamie Verheyleweghen, who stole second base, but then was left behind.

In the top of the eighth, Pioniers got the bases loaded off of new pitcher Brendan Schoemaker. He walked lead-off hitter Brennan Nijhof, who then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Max Draijer. After Dudley Leonora had flied out, Jeffrey Arends was walked intentionally to set up a force play and pitch around the powerhitter. But Schoemaker then walked next batter Shurman Marlin to load the bases. A flyout followed and so, three runners were left behind.

In the bottom of the eighth, Huijer was relieved by Glenn Wassink, who retired the side.

After Schoemaker also retired the side in the top of the ninth, Twins decided the game moments later with two outs. With one out, Wassink gave up a single to Bob van der Meer, but he was ruled out shortly thereafter for running out of line during a steal attempt. With two outs, Wassink got two baserunners when he walked Christopher Ge and gave up a single to Bart Janssen. Hereafter, Scott Ronnenbergh was brought in as reliever, while two outfield-chances also were made. Twins got the bases loaded when Ronnenbergh walked Jamie Verheyleweghen (his fourth walk), which led to the next pitching change. Closer Maickel Rietel was brought in, but he also wasn't successful, as he walked Bram Grooten. And this walk-off walk ended the game as it gave Twins a 2-1 victory.
