DSS completes sweep by winning make-up game vs. UVV
Nederlands

VLEUTEN (Neth.) - DSS completed a 3-game sweep on Tuesday-evening (July 25) by winning the make-up game against Pickles UVV with a 5-1 score. The game was halted by rain on Sunday with DSS leading 2-0 halfway the third inning and then cancelled.

On Thursday-evening, DSS opened the series with an 8-2 win, then won 2-1 on Saturday. On Sunday, DSS became the last team to be eliminated for the Play-Offs, as Hoofddorp Pioniers then won against Curaçao Neptunus to claim fourth place.

Tonight's game started 50 minutes later than scheduled, due to maintenance to the field after rain in the early evening. There was still some drizzling rain continuing until 8 PM. Both Head Coaches wanted to play tonight and as the weather radar signaled that the rain would clear around 8, it was decided to wait until after that time to start the game, instead of cancelling the match-up again. As the game now went underway at 8:20 PM, it was clear to both teams that almost surely no complete 9-inning game could be played tonight, unless it was of course a quick match-up. For evening-games, there is a curfew-rule, which states that no new inning can be started after 10:30 PM. Tonight's game ended after seven complete innings.

Complete schedule

DSS struck early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning off of starter Kevin van Veen. With one out, Odion Gouverneur walked, then scored all the way from first base on a single into right-centerfield by next batter Koen Halderman, who himself ended up on second base on the throw to the plate. Halderman then advanced to third base on an infield-hit by Tino van Erk and both baserunners scored when Omar Williams followed with a 2-run double.

DSS added another run in the top of the third inning. With one out, Koen Halderman and Tino van Erk both singled and advanced on a wild pitch. The run was then scored when Omar Williams followed with a sacrifice fly, making it a 4-0 score.

After leaving a runner on first base in both the fourth and fifth inning, DSS scored its fifth run in the top of the sixth. Djewi Appelman led off with a double and Sven van de Sanden singled and stole second base. His brother Tommy van de Sanden then delivered a runscoring single that lifted the lead to 5-0. With runners on first and third base, a pitching change followed, as Jerremyh Angela took over from Kevin van Veen. Angela retired the next two batters to end the inning.

Reggie Bomberg made his first start of the season for DSS after having been used as a reliever in 12 games so far. He gave up an one-out single to Tijmen Takke in the bottom of the first inning, then walked Sergino Martis with two outs, but avoided giving up runs.

In the bottom of the second inning, trailing 3-0, UVV got a chance to do some scoring, but was unsuccessful. With one out, Julian Goins walked and moved on a grounder. He then advanced when Cecil Comenencia reached on an error, but overran third base and was eliminated in a rundown that ended the inning.

UVV got its next runner in scoring position in the fifth inning, now trailing 4-0. Cecil Comenencia led off with a single and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Rick Kuipers. UVV then got runners at the corners when Tijmen Takke singled, but Reggie Bomberg retired the next two batters. Takke had three of UVV's five basehits tonight.

Trailing 5-0, UVV scored its first and lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lars Vogelaar took over the DSS-pitching and began with a stikeout, but then got the bases loaded. With one out, he gave up a double to Jelle Blaauw and with two outs, Vogelaar walked Jeff Delfina and Julian Rip, which loaded the bases. The righthander then also walked next batter Rick Kuipers, which brought in a run and also led to a pitching change. Robyn Clara took over and closed the at bat with a strikeout.

Both teams got an opportunity to do some additional scoring in the seventh, but failed to do so.

In the top of the seventh, off of new pitcher Jonah Van Bemmelen, Tino van Erk walked with one out, then Omar Williams doubled. But with runners on second and third base, a foul-out and strikeout followed.

In the bottom of the seventh, it was UVV that left runners on second and third base. Sergino Martis walked with one out. Jelle Blaauw was then hit by a pitch with two outs and the two runners moved on a wild pitch. A grounder ended the at bat and that also ended the game, as the 10:30 curfew had been reached.
