Neptunus wins lopsided game against DSS
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus won one of the most lopsided games of the season on a hot Saturday-afternoon (May 27) in Haarlem, as it simply won with a 21-5 score against DSS. The 3-game series ends on Sunday in Rotterdam.

Today was a recordsetting hot day in the month of May in Dutch history, as it reached the 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) (and more) almost everyone in the country.

Neptunus rallied for eleven runs in the second innning. Stijn van der Meer scored four runs, while Dwayne Kemp batted in five and Gianison Boekhoudt had four RBI's. All nine players collected at least one basehit.

The 21 runs are the most Neptunus scored in one game since May 21 of last year when it scored 22 runs against Pickles UVV. The most runs in a game this season were scored by opponent DSS, who scored 23 on April 22 against De Glaskoning Twins.

In the meantime, Neptunus was confronted with two more injuries in its pitching staff. After completion of the game on Thursday-afternoon, Kevin Kelly fell with his scooter and suffered some scratches and a minor injury. However, he was scratched from his start on Sunday. Besides that, reliever Misja Harcksen (who also can be used as a starter) is bothered with a slight injury in his right-leg. Closer Loek van Mil has still not pitched since returning from the World Baseball Classic due to an injury and of course, the team also misses starter Orlando Yntema, due to health problems since early April. That leaves only Berry van Driel available in the bullpen from the original pitching staff. Neptunus recently added American pitcher Trevor Reckling to its roster, but his arrival in Rotterdam had been postponed due to family-circumstances. He is now scheduled to arrive coming week. In the meantime, rookie righthander Mike van der Berg has been added to the roster from the club's second team Tridents and has been named as starting pitcher for Sunday's game.

Complete schedule

Neptunus struck with eleven runs in the second inning, but was unable to hold onto an early 10-run difference. However, from the sixth inning on, nine more runs were added to finish the game with a 16-run difference.

Initially, Neptunus scored just one run in the top of the first inning off of starting pitcher Mike Groen. The righthander walked lead-off hitter Stijn van der Meer, then gave up a single to Benjamin Dille. The two moved on a grounder, then Van der Meer scored on a grounder by Dwayne Kemp to open the score.

In the top of the second inning, 17 batters stepped up to the plate for Neptunus. They produced eight hits and scored eleven runs to give the team a commanding lead. The rally began with singles from Daniel Fernandes and Ruar Verkerk. A single by Gregory Muller led to a run and a following single by Shaldimar Daantji loaded the bases. Hereafter, two runs were scored when a (sacrifice)fly into the outfield from Stijn van der Meer was missed. The bases were loaded again when next batter Benjamin Dille walked. More runs were then added when Christian Diaz followed with a runscoring single and Dwayne Kemp and Gianison Boekhoudt delivered back-to-back 2-run doubles. That led to the first pitching change in the inning, as Gijs Timmer took over from Mike Groen. He walked Daniel Fernandes in his second at bat in the inning, then got the bases loaded again when he also walked Ruar Verkerk. After eleven consecutive batters had reached base safely, the first out was finally recorded when Timmer struckout Gregory Muller. The second out followed moments later when Boekhoudt was forced out at the plate on a grounder by Shaldimar Daantji. With that, Boekhoudt became the lone player not to score a run in this at bat. With two outs, but with the bases still loaded, the scoring continued. Timmer walked Stijn van der Meer (the lone player without a hit in this inning), gave up a runscoring single to Benjamin Dille and threw a runscoring wild pitch that brought in the eleventh run in the inning and increased the lead to 12-0. With runners on second and third base, the bases got loaded again when Christian Diaz walked. Another pitching change followed, as Sven van de Sanden (who is an outfielder) took over. He got a flyout that ended the inning.

And so, 55 minutes were played and the game was only halfway the second inning on a hot afternoon in Haarlem.

In the following three innings, Neptunus failed to take more distance and was held scoreless, while DSS erased the 10-run difference.

In the first inning, DSS got two baserunners, but a double play ended the at bat. After leaving a runner on first base in the second inning, DSS scored three runs in the bottom of the third. Starter Elton Koeiman got the bases loaded when Mitchel Dautzenberg, Odion Gouverneur and Kevin Nieveld began the inning with singles. A sacrifice fly by Koen Halderman and a 2-run double by Omar Williams then accounted for three runs.

Neptunus turned another double play in the fourth, but then gave up the fourth DSS-run in the fifth. With one out, Kevin Nieveld walked and Koen Halderman singled. With two outs, a run was scored when an error followed a single by Tino van Erk, but DSS stranded runners on second and third base.

In the top of the sixth, Neptunus got productive again and made it another 10-run difference (and more). Shaldimar Daantji led off with a walk, then the bases got loaded when Stijn van der Meer singled and pinch-hitter Urving Kemp also walked. The three then respectively score on a passed ball, a single by Christian Diaz and a sacrifice fly by Dwayne Kemp. With two outs, Diaz scored the fourth run in the inning when a hit by Daniel Fernandes ended in an error. And that made it a 16-4 score.

DSS threatened the 10-run difference again in the bottom of the sixth when it scored another run. Devano Pieter led off with a triple and scored on an one-out single by Mitchel Dautzenberg, but he stranded on first base himself.

In the top of the seventh, Neptunus made sure that the 10-run difference didn't got into jeopardy again by scoring five 'insurance runs'. Second baseman Kevin Nieveld took the mound for DSS in this at bat and got the bases loaded immediately. Jochem Koedijk walked, Shaldimar Daantji singled and Stijn van der Meer also walked. A force play-grounder by Urving Kemp led to a run and a walk for Christian Diaz re-loaded the bases. More runs were then added when Dwayne Kemp was hit by a pitch, a wild pitch and a 2-run double by Gianison Boekhoudt. In the end, Neptunus left three runners behind, but now led 21-5. In the bottom of the seventh, with one out, Omar Williams and Tino van Erk both reached on errors, but a line out and force out then ended the lopsided game.
