Neptunus rallies in seventh inning to win big against UVV
Nederlands

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus recorded a convincing 12-2 victory in seven innings on Thursday-evening (July 27) against Pickles UVV, which now has lost five games in a row. Despite the win, Neptunus gets closer to being eliminated for first place. League-leader L&D Amsterdam Pirates tonight played a 3-3 tie against Hoofddorp Pioniers. Last weekend, Pioniers won twice against Neptunus to complete the top-4 that will play in the Championship Pool.

Leading 5-2, Neptunus rallied for seven runs to reach a 10-run difference in the bottom of the seventh inning and end the game via the mercy-rule. Neptunus collected 14 basehits, including three by Jochem Koedijk and a homerun by Gianison Boekhoudt. Except for lead-off hitter Stijn van der Meer, all other players had at least one basehit. All nine players did score at least once.

With tonight's loss, UVV will close the regular season in either sixth or seventh place. Because of the result of this game, as well as the win of HCAW against De Glaskoning Twins, DSS will finish the regular season in fifth place. DSS has no games scheduled in this round.

Before tonight's game, Neptunus Head Coach Ronald Jaarsma confirmed that righthander Orlando Yntema will return to the mound to make his first appearance of the season. He will be the starting pitcher for Neptunus coming Saturday in the second game of the series in Vleuten.

At the neighboring track-and-field site, the sounds could be heared from the brassbands practicing for the annual 'Battle of Drums', which is part of Rotterdam Unlimited. Participating in this years battle are the brassbands Talent For Music, Rythm Allstars and Dreamtime Showtime. They will perfom on Friday-evening, each starting on a different location, walking through the streets of the city-center of Rotterdam en route to the Hofplein for the 'battle'. The performance on the main stage will begin at 8:15 PM. The 'Battle of Drums' will be followed by the Summer Carnival on Saturday.

Complete schedule

After being retired in order in the first inning, Neptunus opened the score with three runs in the second at bat off of starter Timo van Ancum. Dwayne Kemp led off with a bunt-single, then Christian Diaz walked. With one out, the two executed a double-steal and when that was followed by a throwing error, Kemp scored the first run. Gregory Muller then also walked and Jochem Koedijk singled to make it a 2-0 score. Muller then moved to third base when Shaldimar Daantji flied out and he scored on the throw to second base when Koedijk stole second base moments later.

Neptunus was retired in order again the third inning, then left three runners behind in the fourth.

Diegomar Markwell went the distance for Neptunus and retired the first ten batters he faced, including five of them with a strikeout. The lefthander then got two baserunners in the top of the fourth when Tijmen Takke singled and Berend Ruben walked. Hereafter, two force play-grounders followed.

In the top of the fifth, UVV narrowed the deficit to 3-2 when Markwell gave up three of the four hits he allowed tonight. He first walked Jelle Blaauw, then gave up an one-out single to Jordan Illis. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Julian Rip reached on an infield-hit. Next batter Tijmen Takke delivered a 2-run single. This was to be UVV's last basehit tonight and it was also held scoreless and even held off the bases in the remainder of the game, as Markwell retired the side again in the sixth and seventh inning and raised his record to 8-2. In the top of the sixth, first baseman Daniel Fernandes tried to catch a foul ball over the fence at the first base dug-out side, but the ball was way out of reach and Fernandes landed on a table, which is located there.

Neptunus got one run back in the bottom of the fifth when Gianison Boekhoudt homered with one out. Boekhoudt now leads the league with six homeruns. Before tonight, he was tied with Gilmer Lampe (L&D Amsterdam Pirates).

Neptunus added another run in the sixth. With two outs, Jochem Koedijk singled and stole second base, then scored when Shaldimar Daantji followed with a double. Hereafter, Stijn van der Meer walked, but at the same time, Daantji took off towards third base and was eliminated there to end the inning.

Leading 5-2, Neptunus rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to reach a 10-run difference and end the game. Jimmy Osinga started the inning in relief of Timo van Ancum. He gave up a lead-off single to Benjamin Dille, then got a flyout. Another out could gave been recorded on a force play-grounder by Dwayne Kemp, but a fielding error led to runners on first and second base. Both scored when Christian Diaz followed with a triple. Moments later, Diaz scored himself on a single by Daniel Fernandes, which also led to a pitching change. Roderick Hennekes took over, but was greeted with a double from Gregory Muller. A 2-run double by Shaldimar Daantji and a runscoring single by Benjamin Dille then made it an 11-2 score. The game ended when Gianison Boekhoudt delivered a walk-off, runscoring single.
