HCAW wins big and moves into first place
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - HCAW recorded a big 17-0 victory in seven innings on Friday-evening (April 28) against DSS to win its fifth consecutive game. With the win, HCAW took sole possession of first place in the Dutch big league.

Before the game, the Bussum-squad was tied in first place with L&D Amsterdam Pirates, which has no games scheduled this week due to the odd number of teams in the big league.

Leading 3-0, HCAW rallied for nine runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead. HCAW collected 16 basehits tonight, while DSS recorded only one, which was hit in the first inning.

HCAW was led by Delano Selassa and Vince Rooi, who both hit three basehits, scored three runs and batted in three. Raoell Kortstam, who homered, had four runs batted in.

The 17 runs HCAW scored tonight were the most the team scored since May 29 of last year. Back then, HCAW scored 18 runs, which also came in an away-game at DSS, winning 18-1. Both then and now, Jim Ploeger was the winning pitcher.

HCAW struck early off of former teammate Sander Helmendach, who was tonight's starter for DSS. After retiring the next two batters, Helmendach gave up another runscoring single to Sven Jongejans in his second at bat in the inning. That marked the end for the righthander, who was relieved by Lars Vogelaar. The rookie was greeted with a 3-run homerun by Raoell Kortstam, which lifted to lead to 12-0. The long inning then finally ended when Vogelaar struckout next batter Roelie Henrique.
