Nederlands

VLEUTEN (Neth.) - Hoofddorp Pioniers, which had no games scheduled a week ago, trailed twice on Friday-evening (April 28) against Pickles UVV, but came alongside both times and went on to win 4-2 in ten innings.

Pioniers opened the season two weeks ago losing two of its three games against HCAW.

UVV started with three wins against De Glaskoning Twins, but then was swept by HCAW.

UVV outhit Pioniers 8-6 tonight, but lost its fourth consecutive game.

(April 28)

Complete schedule

After being retired in order in the first inning, UVV opened the score in the second at bat off of starter Lars Huijer. With two outs, Steven van Reem singled and Julian Goins doubled. A wild pitch then accounted for the run.

It was to be the lone run in the first five innings.

UVV was retired in order again in the third, then saw Randy Daal lead off the fourth inning with a single, but moments later, Hoofddorp Pioniers turned a double play.

UVV again got on base in the bottom of the fifth. That inning began with a defensive replacement. Lead-off hitter Steven van Reem flied out to rightfielder Glenn Bakker, who made a diving catch. While landing, he injured his left-shoulder and was replaced by Brennan Nijhof. With two outs, Cecil Comenencia reached on an infield-hit, stole second base, but was left behind.

UVV-starter Timo van Ancum retired the first ten batters he faced. With one out in the fourth, the righthander walked Sander Paap, who advanced when a pick-off ended in an error. He was able to move to third base on a flyout, but then stranded.

Pioniers appeared to be more productive in the fifth. Van Ancum's No-Hitter ended when Quintin De Cuba led off with a double, but the next two batters were retired. Van Ancum then walked Mark Smit, but closed the inning with a strikeout.

Pioniers came alongside in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Mervin Gario tripled and Jeffrey Arends walked. Shortly hereafter, Gario scored the tying run on a wild pitch. In the Opening Series of the season, Gario didn't play, as he had to sit out a 3-game suspension, which was a left-over from last season.

UVV re-took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Jelle Blaauw led off with a single and Bryce Cherry followed with a double. Lars Huijer then struckout the next two batters, but Tijmen Takke singled to bring in Blaauw and make it a 2-1 score. Cherry also tried to score on Takke's basehit, but he was eliminated at the plate, ending the inning. It has been announced that Takke will leave the team in August to play at the college-level in the USA.

That lead was shortlived, as Pioniers answered with a run in the top of the seventh inning. Shurman Marlin led off with a walk, got into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt by Gianni Frolijk and scored on a 2-out single by Brennan Nijhof.

With the score at 2-2, the bullpen took over.

Glenn Wassink relieved Lars Huijer in the bottom of the seventh and retired the side. He gave up a lead-off single to Rick Kuipers in the eighth, but he stranded on second base.

José Moreno took over for Van Ancum in the top of the eighth. Van Ancum had thrown seven fine innings and gave up only three hits, but ended up with a no-decision. After taking over the pitching, Moreno gave up a 2-out single to Jeffrey Arends, who then was left behind.

In the top of the ninth, Gianni Frolijk walked with one out, but his pinch-runner Joey Eeman was then caught stealing. UVV also got a baserunner in its ninth at bat. With two outs, Steven van Reem reached on an error, then was left behind. And so, the game went into extra innings.

Pioniers took a 4-2 lead in the top of the tenth inning, scoring two unearned runs, thanks to two defensive errors. With one out, Dudley Leonora reached on an error and scored on a following triple by Sander Paap, who went on to score the next run on another error.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, Maickel Rietel took over the pitching for Pioniers. He secured the lead, as he closed the game by retiring the side.
