Pioniers avoids sweep by winning slow game in Oosterhout
Nederlands

OOSTERHOUT (Neth.) - Last-placed De Glaskoning Twins ended a 13-game losing streak a week ago, then surprised by winning the first two games of the 3-game series against Hoofddorp Pioniers. Twins won 2-1 on Thursday and 5-4 in eleven innings on Saturday. But on Sunday (May 28), Pioniers avoided a sweep by winning 14-9 in a slow game that lasted three hours and 41 minutes. As all home-games of Twins start at 3 PM, the game almost turned into a night-game, as it ended at 6:41 PM.

There also were an ejection and a protest in this game.

In today's game, Twins only led after completion of the first inning with an 1-0 score. Pioniers scored twice in the second at bat and from there, it led the entire game. The Hoofddorp-squad enlarged its lead to 10-2, but was unable to reach a 10-run, mercy-rule difference. Instead, Twins narrowed the deficit to 10-8.

Pioniers collected 14 basehits, including four by Mervin Gario, who scored three runs. Mark Smit batted in four runs.

Twins had 13 basehits in today's game, including three by Jamie Verheyleweghen, who also scored three runs. Melvin Perdue homered and Christopher Ge batted in four runs.

Complete schedule

In the top of the first inning, Pioniers got two baserunners with two outs when Twins-starter Daisuke Yamashita walked Dudley Leonora and Shurman Marlin, but the Japanese righthander closed with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the first inning, it was Twins that opened the score off of starter Nick Keur. He gave up a lead-off infield-hit to Jamie Verheyleweghen, which was followed by a throwing error. With one out, the Belgian player advanced to third base on a grounder, then was awarded home plate after a balk was called.

The lead was shortlived, as Pioniers answered with two runs in the top of the second at bat. Yamashita hit lead-off hitter Glenn Bakker, then gave up a single to Gianni Frolijk. That was followed by an outfield-error, which enabled Bakker to score the tying run, while Frolijk moved to second base. Frolijk then advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Mark Smit and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joey Eeman.

In the bottom of the second inning, two Twins-runners were eliminated at third base. Keur gave up a lead-off single to Mick Molenaar, then walked Menno Lenting. The first was forced out at third base, then Lenting was caught stealing at third moments later.

In the top of the third, Pioniers scored two more runs. The team got on base quickly. Mervin Gario and Dudley Leonora opened with singles to put runners at the corners. A wild pitch led to a run and hereafter, Shurman Marlin walked. With two outs, a single by Gianni Frolijk brought in another run and made it a 4-1 score.

Twins got one run back in its third. Jamie Verheyleweghen and Nick Peels singled with one out. Dennis De Quint followed with a runscoring double. A double play then ended the inning. Melvin Perdue flied out to righfield and when Peels tried to score, he was eliminated at the plate, which completed a double play and ended the inning. Following this play, Twins Assistant Coach Kevin Knollenburg went into a discussion with Home Plate Umpire Edwin Louisa regarding the 'collission-rule'. In the end, that resulted in the ejection of Knollenburg.

Pioniers rallied for six runs in the top of the fourth to take more distance. Rookie Joey Eeman led off with a triple and scored on a following single by Brennan Nijhof. Mervin Gario and Dudley Leonora (RBI) also singled, which led to a pitching change. Jan Evertse took over from Yamashita. He got the bases loaded when he walked Shurman Marlin. An error at the plate following a force play-grounder by Max Draijer produced the next run. Evertse recovered and struckout the next two batters, but he then gave up a 3-run double to Mark Smit that lifted the lead to 10-2. Evertse closed with another strikeout.

With that, Pioniers to be en route to a mercy-rule run-difference, but in the bottom of fifth, it was Twins that rallied for six runs with two outs. With one out, Jamie Verheyleweghen and Nick Peels both singled. With two outs, both scored when Melvin Perdue homered. It was the first big league-homerun for the American outfielder, who last season was the leading hitter of DSS. The bases then got loaded when Mick Molenaar singled and both Menno Lenting and Tair Vrutaal both walked. A pitching change followed and Darryl Jamoena took over, but he was greeted with a 3-run double by Christopher Ge that narrowed the deficit to only 10-8. Denzel Bryson followed with a single. Ge was sent home to score, but was eliminated at the plate to end the inning. This led to another discussion regarding the 'collission-rule', as the Twins-coaches stated that the catcher had blocked plate and the runner had no chance to score. Twins then filed a protest.

In the sixth, Pioniers scored a run when Mark Smit walked with the bases loaded, but the inning ended with a double play. The team scored another run in the seventh on a double by Shurman Marlin.

Trailing 12-8, Twins scored its next run in the bottom of the seventh on a ground-rule double by Christopher Ge, but the team left two runners behind.

Pioniers added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Joey Eeman led off with a walk and scored on a double by Sander Paap, who then scored the next run on a single by Mervin Gario.

With a 12-9 lead, Angelo Wicklert took over the Pioniers-pitching in the bottom of the eighth. He took over from Glenn Wassink, who had entered the game in the sixth. Wicklert did well and retired the side. Maickel Rietel then threw the ninth. He walked a batter with two outs, but a grounder then ended the game.

As starting pitcher Nick Keur didn't throw the necessary five complete innings to earn the win, it was up the Official Scorers to determine the winning pitcher. Keur left after 4 2/3 inning with a 10-5 lead. According to Rule 9.17 (b), 'the relief pitcher who, in the official scorer's judgment was the most effective' shall be credited with the win. The win was credited to Wassink.
