DSS wins in tenth and ends winning streak HCAW
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - DSS trailed 7-3 halfway the seventh inning, then came alongside and went on to win 8-7 in ten innings on Sunday (April 30) against HCAW.

For HCAW, which is the league-leader since Saturday, the loss ended a 6-game winning streak.

After tying the score, DSS decided the game with one out in the tenth inning. Odion Gouverneur then led off with a walk, moved on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch and scored on a single by Kevin Nieveld.

HCAW had to do without its rookie short stop Delano Selassa, who will be out for some weeks with a fracture in his right wrist. In Saturday's game, he led off the fifth inning and was hit a pitched ball on his wrist, which was ruled a foul ball. Selassa completed the at bat, but then left the game. Later, a fracture was diagnosed in the hospital. Selassa was off to a good start of the season and batted .313 (10-for-32) with a double and two triples, scored six runs and batted in seven.

Complete schedule

HCAW appeared to have a 'comfortable' 6-1 lead halfway the sixth inning, but then DSS started to take over control of the game. After scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth, DSS trailed 7-3 when the bottom of the seventh began. The home team then rallied for four runs and went on to win 8-7 in ten innings.

Today's game was attractive and had some great defensive plays from both teams, including two rare moments in the eighth inning. There also were some close plays, but umpires Winfried Berkvens and Jan-Willem van der Paauw did a fine job handling the game. This season, for all third games of a series, only two umpires are assigned instead of three. Having only two umpires can create some difficulties, as a lot is going on during a game at the big league-level. Also, in case one of the two umpires gets injured, the game will be halted, as it is not allowed to play at big league-game with only one umpire.

This last could have been a possibility today. In the top of the first inning, HCAW's lead-off hitter Roelie Henrique hit a foul ball off the mask of Home Plate Umpire Winfried Berkvens. The veteran umpire, who did a fine job behind the plate, walked away from the plate and needed a brief moment to recover from the hard hit. But luckily, Berkvens, who officiated during the World Baseball Classic in March, was able to continue the game.

With two outs in the top of the first, HCAW left runners on first and third base off of starter Donny Breek, who then retired the side in the next two innings.

DSS opened the score in the bottom of the second inning off of starter Ian Delemarre. With one out, the bases got loaded when Tino van Erk singled, Jordan Illis walked and Levine Gabriëls also singled. Van Erk then scored on a sacrifice fly by Sven van de Sanden, but the home team left two runners behind.

HCAW came alongside in the top of the fourth Vince Rooi led off with his second double in the game, moved on a grounder and scored on a single by Kevin Dirksen, but a double play ended the at bat.

In the fifth, HCAW broke the 1-1 score when Seb Visser led off with a walk and scored on a 2-out double by Roelie Henrique, who later stranded on third base.

HCAW staged a 4-run rally in the top of the sixth inning, but three runs were unearned. Vince Rooi and Rossini Frolijk opened with walks and Kevin Dirksen followed with a runscoring single. This led to a pitching change, as Reggie Bomberg took over from Donny Breek. He got two quick outs, but then an error was made on a grounder by Rachid Engelhardt, resulting in another run. The bases got loaded when Raoell Kortstam walked and when next batter Roelie Henrique also walked, a run was scored and the bases remained loaded. A runscoring single by Dylan Koster followed to increase the lead to 6-1, but three runners were left behind.

DSS got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jordan Illis and Levine Gabriëls began the at bat with walks and hereafter, HCAW also went to the bullpen. Moreno Vork took over, but got the bases loaded when he walked Sven van de Sanden. With one out, a run was scored on a force play-grounder by Odion Gouverneur With Gabriëls on third base and Gouverneur on first, the latter took off to steal second base successfully. Catcher Dyan Koster threw the ball to second baseman Roelie Henrique, who then dropped it enabling Gabriëls to score.

HCAW scored another run in the top of the seventh, which also was the result of an error. Rossini Frolijk led off with a walk, but was forced out on a grounder by Kevin Dirksen, who injured his leg while reaching first base. After advancing on a single by Kevin Weijgertse, Dirksen was replaced out of precaution by pinch-runner Boyd Tuhumury, who later scored on an error to make it a 7-3 score.

In the bottom of the seventh, the game turned the way of DSS, as it scored four runs to equal the score. Steven van Groningen became the new pitcher for HCAW, but he hit lead-off hitter Kevin Nieveld, then got the bases loaded with one out when Tino van Erk singled and Jordan Illis walked. A runscoring wild pitch followed, then the bases were re-loaded when Levine Gabriëls also walked. That brought out HCAW's Head Coach Roeland Henrique, who replaced Van Groningen by Oscar Meuris. HCAW still led 7-4 at this moment, but another run was scored on a sacrifice fly by Sven van de Sanden. Hereafter, Mitchel Dautzenberg followed with a runscoring single and another wild pitch made it a 7-7 score, before the inning ended with a flyout.

In the bottom of the eighth, closer Sedley Karel took over the pitching for HCAW and was supported with two rare defensive plays. Lead-off hitter Thomas Bos lined the ball to rightfielder Rachid Engelhardt, who got it in time to first baseman Kevin Weijgertse to eliminate the sliding runner. Next batter Kevin Nieveld singled, but hereafter, it was Omar Williams, who was eliminated by Engelhardt with a 9-3 close play at first base. A 9-3 out is seen some times during a season in softball, however, it also has become rare in that sport in the last few years. A 9-3 out almost never happens in baseball, let alone twice in the same inning! So, it is almost sure that this has been the first time in history that this has happened.

In the top of the ninth inning, HCAW got the bases loaded with two outs. Reggie Bomberg struckout the first two batters, but then walked Boyd Tuhumury and hit next batters Kevin Weijgertse and Seb Visser with a pitch. Rookie Lars Vogelaar was then brought in as reliever and he got a flyout, meaning three runners were left behind.

DSS left a runner behind in the bottom of the ninth and so, the game went into extra innings.

In the top of the 10th inning, HCAW got close to a run. With two outs, Dylan Koster and Vince Rooi singled. Rossini Frolijk then also singled. Koster was waved home, but was eliminated by catcher Levine Gabriëls on a nice throw by rightfielder Sven van de Sanden.

In the bottom of the 10th, Odion Gouverneur led off with a walk and moved into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt by Thomas Bos. Gouverneur advanced to third base on a wild pitch, then scored the winning run when Kevin Nieveld lined the ball through the middle for a walk-off single.

The game saw some nice defensive plays. Not only the two rare outs at first base by HCAW-rightfielder Rachid Engelhardt, but also some nice plays from DSS-infielders Tino van Erk (1B), Thomas Bos (2B) and Mitchel Dautzenberg (SS). The DSS-defense had 19 assists in this game, which is the highest total in the big league this season. For DSS, it was its highest total of assists since June 18, 2015 when it got 20 assists against The Hawks. Short stop Mitchel Dautzenberg got nine assists today, which also is the highest total for a player this season. The highest total last season also was nine, which was done twice by short stop Michael Duursma of Amsterdam Pirates. In 2015, Dautzenberg had a league-leading 11 assists as short stop in the above mentioned game against The Hawks.

Besides a lot of assists, HCAW had eleven, there also were a lot of walks in this game. Five HCAW-pitchers walked 11 batters, while three DSS-pitchers walked eight.
