Nederlands

NEW YORK, New York (USA) - Didi Gregorius has been named Player of the Month April in the American League, which was announced on Wednesday (May 2). In the National League, that honor went to A.J. Pollock (Arizona Diamondbacks). For both, it was the first time that they won this award. In the past, the two were teammates while playing for the Diamondbacks.

On Monday, Gregorius also was named Player of the Week. In the previous week, Gregorius batted .357, had 10 runs batted and scored seven runs, while hitting four homeruns.

The 28-year old Gregorius dominated in April for the New York Yankees Not powerhitters Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Brett Gardner led the squad offensively, but Amsterdam-born Didi Gregorius.

In April, the short stop led the Major League in homeruns (10), runs batted in (30) and slugging average (.735). Twice, Gregorius hit two homeruns in one game. He became only the fourth short stop since 1908 to hit ten homeruns in the first 27 games of his team.

He also became only the third player in the rich history of the Yankees to hit eight or more homeruns and has 27 or more RBI's in the first 22 games. The others were legendary Babe Ruth (1921) and Alex Rodriguez (2007).

Didi Gregorius joined the Yankees after the 2014 season to succeed Derek Jeter as short stop. Last year, by hitting 25 homeruns, Gregorius broke Jeter's team-record for most homeruns by a short stop.
