Hoofddorp Pioniers scored a run in the first and sixth inning and led 2-0 after seven complete innings.
Starting pitcher Lars Huijer had another fine outing for Pioniers, just as he had in the season's opener a week ago against Curaçao Neptunus.
In that game, he ran into problems in only one inning, giving up four runs.
Tonight, he held DSS scoreless, gave up only three basehits and struckout nine batters, while walking only one.
He left the mound with a 2-0 lead, but hereafter, the bullpen failed to hold onto it.
DSS got only two baserunners in scoring position off of Huijer, who was supported with two double plays.
In the second inning, the righthander gave up an one-out single to Tommy van de Sanden, who stole second base with two outs, but Huijer closed with a strikeout.
In the third inning, Sander Paap, who last year played for Pioniers, led off with a walk, but he was eliminated on a bunt by Devano Pieter.
The latter moved to second base on a grounder, but also stranded there.
In the fourth, Huijer gave up a lead-off single to Tino van Erk, but his defense then turned a double play.
The righthander struckout three hitters in the fifth and added two more strikeouts in the sixth.
Huijer gave up another lead-off single to Van Erk in the seventh, but another double play followed.
In the meantime, Pioniers had scored two runs off of Australian righthander Greg Mosel, who also is the coach of the second team of DSS, which plays in the second highest league.
In the first inning, Pioniers scored an unearned run.
Lead-off hitter Joey Eeman reached on an error and stole second base.
With one out, he scored when Glenn Bakker also reached on an error.
In the second inning, DSS committed another error on a grounder by lead-off hitter Mark Smit.
He also stole second base, but then was left behind.
In the following two innings, Pioniers reached base again, but some runners were eliminated.
In the third, Joey Eeman led off with an infield-hit, but was caught stealing.
In the fourth, Jelle Kroft led off with a single.
He was forced out on a grounder by Mark Smit, who then was caught stealing after a pick-off.
The bottom of the fifth began with a rare play.
Leandro Anasagasti led off for Pioniers and grounded to second base, but a throwing error to first base followed.
Anasagasti reached base, but was eliminated moments later.
Catcher Sander Paap backed up the throw and threw the ball to first baseman Tino van Erk, who tagged out Anasagasti (423).
Hereafter, Duco Nuijten and Joey Eeman singled, but were left behind.
Pioniers then doubled its lead in the sixth inning.
Glenn Bakker led off with a walk, stole second base and moved to third base with one out on a grounder.
Bakker scored when Mark Smit singled.
After the DSS-defense had turned a double play in the bottom of the seventh, the team struck with three runs in the top of the eighth.
That was done off of Ryan Oduber, who took over the pitching from Lars Huijer.
Oduber walked lead-off hitter Koen Halderman.
The lefthander followed with a strikeout, but then also walked Sander Paap
Hereafter, he gave up a 2-run double to Devano Pieter that tied the score.
Next hitter Kevin Nieveld then hit a comeback-grounder to Oduber, but he made a throwing error, which enabled Pieter to score.
Nieveld advanced to second base, where he was left behind, but DSS led 3-2.
The lead was shortlived, as Pioniers came alongside in its eighth at bat.
The team failed to do some more scoring, as it left three runners behind.
With one out, Pioniers got the bases loaded off of reliever Tim Halderman, who had taken over the pitching in the previous inning.
Halderman hit Glenn Bakker with a pitch, then walked Jelle Kroft and gave up a single to Tyler Boersma.
That led to a pitching change, as Reggie Bomberg was brought in.
He was greeted with a runscoring single from Mark Smit that brought in the tying run.
A foul-out and strikeout followed and with that, three runners were left behind.
In the top of the ninth, Angelo Wicklert became the new pitcher for Pioniers.
He walked lead-off hitter Omar Williams, but then struckout the next three batters.
Pioniers left a runner behind on first base in its ninth at bat and so, the game went into extra innings.
In the top of the tenth, Sander Paap led off for DSS with a bunt-single off of new pitcher Alexander Valdez, who then also struckout the next three hitters.
Also in this inning, DSS 3B Coach Jeroen Seggelink argued regarding a possible balk and was ejected by Home Plate Umpire Stenar van Groningen Schinkel.
In the bottom of the tenth, Reggie Bomberg came back to throw again for DSS, but then sustained an injury while entering the field and had to be replaced by Mike Groen.
He gave up a 2-out single to Mark Smit, his third basehit in this game, but a grounder ended the at bat.
And that also ended the game, as the 10:30 PM curfew-time had been reached.
