Neptunus completes second sweep of season
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus won 5-1 on Sunday-afternoon (May 6) against HCAW to compete its second 3-game sweep of the season.

A week ago, Neptunus also won its first series of the season against Hoofddorp Pioniers.

Neptunus decided the first games of the series against HCAW late. On Thursday-evening, the team then led only 1-0 after four innings, but went on to record a comfortable 9-1 victory. On Saturday, Neptunus outscored HCAW 12-2. In that game, Neptunus led only 4-2 halfway the seventh inning, but then rallied for eight runs to end the game via the mercy-rule.

Today's game was initially scheduled to start at 2:30 PM. That was changed earlier in the week to 2:05 PM, due to a possible live TV-broadcast. However, because of some deciding games in volleyball and hockey, the broadcast fell through, but nevertheless, the game went underway at 2:05 PM.

For the third consecutive game (and fifth in its six games played), Neptunus collected a double-digit total of basehits. After hitting 16 in the opener and 19 on Saturday, the team today recorded 12 basehits.

Neptunus led 5-0 halfway the seventh inning, but today, the team didn't need some additional runs as was the case in the first two games of the series against HCAW. Today, HCAW scored only once and that was done in the bottom of the seventh.

Neptunus got its first runner in scoring position in the top of the first inning with two outs. Dwayne Kemp then singled and stole second base, but was left behind.

In the second at bat, Neptunus opened the score off of starter Kaj Timmermans. Shaldimar Daantji led off with a single, advanced on a wild pitch, then scored on a single by Quintin De Cuba. With one out, Darryl Collins, the grandson of Neptunus' Bench Coach Jan Collins, also singled, but two runners were left behind.

Neptunus was retired in order by Timmermans in the next two innings, but took some more distance in the fifth at bat. After having retired nine consecutive batters, the righthander gave up a single to Jochem Koedijk, who scored when Stijn van der Meer followed with a triple. Moments later, Van der Meer scored the next run on an error.

After having left two more baserunners in the sixth inning, Neptunus again scored twice in de seventh at bat to make it a 5-0 score. Both were unearned, as the HCAW-defense made two errors. Jochem Koedijk led off with a single, but was forced out on second base on a bunt by Stijn van der Meer. The latter also appeared to be forced out on a grounder by next hitter Benjamin Dille, but a throwing error followed, which gave Neptunus runners at the corners. It also led to a pitching change, as Timo van Ancum took over from Kaj Timmermans. He was greeted with a runscoring single from Dwayne Kemp. The next run was scored by Dille when a pick-off to first base ended in a throwing error.

HCAW reached base several times in the first four innings, but was held scoreless by veteran righthander Elton Koeiman.

With two outs in the first inning, Koeiman gave up singles to Roelie Henrique and Vince Rooi, but they stranded. In the second and third inning, HCAW left a runner behind on first base.

Trailing only 1-0, HCAW left three runners behind in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Seb Visser and Patrick Bok both singled. Next hitter Kevin Weijgertse also singled. Visser was waved home, but was eliminated at the plate. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Julian Goins reached on an error, but a flyout ended this scoring opportunity.

Koeiman retired the side in the fifth inning, then was relieved with one out in the sixth by Berry van Driel, who completed the inning and retired the next two hitters.

Trailing 5-0, HCAW scored its lone run in the seventh inning. After Van Driel had struckout the lead-off hitter, Riki Saito took over the Neptunian pitching. He also began with a strikeout, but then walked Jeandro Tromp, who advanced on a passed ball and scored on a single by Delano Selassa. Next hitter Roelie Henrique also singled, but two runners were left behind.

In the top of the eighth, Neptunus got three baserunners, but one was caught stealing and other forced out. In the bottom of the eighth, it was Saito's turn to be relieved after having retired the first hitter. Loek van Mil took over, while rookie Joel Hernandez became the new catcher. Neptunus still has to do without experienced catcher Gianison Boekhoudt. He sustained an injury during the exhibition season and probably will be out for some additional weeks. Van Mil retired the two batters he faced to complete the eighth inning.

Neptunus got runners on second and third base with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, but they were left behind. In the bottom of the ninth, Van Mil gave up an one-out single to Denzel Bryson, but struckout the next two hitters to close the game.
