Kalian Sams and Québec empty-handed in opener CanAm-Final

QUÉBEC CITY (Ville de Québec), Québec (Canada) - Les Capitales de Québec opened the best-of-five Championship Series of the CanAmLeague on Wednesday-evening (September 12) with a 7-3 loss at home against Sussex County Miners. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but then rained out.

In the opener, the team of Dutch outfielder Kalian Sams collected only five basehits.

Sussex County Miners opened the score in the top of the fifth inning on two singles. The team added three runs in the sixth at bat on a 3-run double by Audy Ciriaco.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Québec narrowed the deficit to 4-3 when it also scored three runs. Zach Wilson led off with a single, then Kalian Sams flied out. Wilson then advanced on a grounder and scored on a double by Maxx Tissenbaum. Hereafter, Nick Van Stratten and Brad Antchak followed with runscoring singles. A pitching change followed, then the inning ended with a strikeout.

Sussex County answered with three more runs in the top of the eighth. With one out and two runners on base, a pitching change followed, but new pitcher Will Dennis was greeted with a 3-run homerun by Daniel Mateo.

Québec was retired in order in the bottom of the eighth, then got one more baserunner in the ninth. Kalian Sam led off, but popped out to the catcher. Next hitter TJ White was hit by a pitch, but a strikeout followed. With White on first base, Phildrick Llewellyn entered the game as pinch-hitter. The Dutch catcher flied out, which ended the game.

Sams was 0-for-3 with a walk in the opener.

Game 2 will be played on Thursday.
