Amsterdam Pirates wins big to complete vs. Quick Amersfoort
Nederlands

AMERSFOORT (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates recorded a convincing 15-5, mercy-rule, victory in seven innings against Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort on a chilly and sometomes rainy Sunday-afternoon (May 13).

On Thursday-afternoon, Amsterdam opened the 3-game series with a 9-0 shutout. In the second game on Saturday, the team broke a 2-2 tie in the third inning and went on to win 8-4.

Amsterdam Pirates led 15-1 when the bottom half of the seventh inning began, needing three outs to end the game via the 10-run difference, mercy-rule. However, Quick Amersfoort scored four runs, including two on a homerun by Bryan Engelhardt. Despite that, Amsterdam hold onto the 10-run difference and so, the game ended after seven complete innings.

Amsterdam collected 15 basehits, including three by Rashid Gerard, who also batted in three runs and scored twice. Linoy Croes scored four runs for the Amsterdam-squad. Eight of the nine starting players had at least one basehit, while seven scored at least once.

Rob Cordemans threw the final two innings for Amsterdam and struckout three hitters. With that, the veteran righthander now needs 14 strikeouts to even the All-Time StrikeOut-record, which is held by Bart Volkerijk.

Amsterdam Pirates opened the score with two runs in the second inning off of starter Jos de Jong. The righthander pitched several seasons for Amsterdam when he played together for the squad with his brother Bas de Jong. The past few seasons, the two played for Quick Amersfoort. Bas de Jong retired after last season.

In the top of the second inning, De Jong hit lead-off hitter Kenny Berkenbosch with a pitch. He then reached second base safely when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Linoy Croes. With one out, the first run was scored on a double by Rashid Gerard, then the next run was added on a sacrifice fly by Max Clarijs.

Amsterdam added two more runs in the fourth. With one out, Linoy Croes singled and with two outs, Rashid Gerard did the same. With runners on first and third base, Gerard stole second base and on the throw, Croes scored. Hereafter, Gerard scored the next run when Max Clarijs followed with a double. After today's games, Clarijs leads the league with a .458 batting average and also has the most runs batted in with twelve.

Quick Amersfoort left a runner behind on third base in the second inning off of starter Kyle Ward. Bryan Engelhardt led off with a double and moved on a grounder, but was left behind. The team then got one run back in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Engelhardt hit another double and with two outs, he scored on a double by Jules Cremer. In both the second and this inning, Ward closed with a strikeout.

With a 4-1 lead, Amsterdam enlarged its lead with two big rallies, scoring five runs in the fifth and six runs in the sixth at bat.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Amsterdam-offense produced six basehits, while the Quick-defense contributed with two errors, but all runs were earned. Remco Draijer led off with a bunt-single, then scored when an outfield-error followed a single by next hitter Zerzinho Croes, who ended up on second base. Nick Urbanus added an RBI-double and with one out, the next run was scored on a single by Linoy Croes, who was able to advance to third base on another outfield-error. This all led to a pitching change, as Jasper Popken took over. He was greeted with a runscoring double from Rodney Daal, then saw another run being scored on a sacrifice fly by Rashid Gerard.

In the 6-run rally in the sixth inning, Amsterdam recorded five basehits. With one out and Zerzinho Croes (infield-hit) and Nick Urbanus (another double) on the bases, Kenny Berkenbosch delivered a 2-run single. A pitching change followed and new pitcher Aaron Isenia began with a walk for Linoy Croes. He then gave up an RBI-double to Rodney Daal and a runscoring single to Rashid Gerard. As an outfield-error was made, another run was scored, while Gerard ended up on second base. After Gerard had moved to third base on a wild pitch, Max Clarijs walked. While the latter was forced out on a grounder by Niels van Weert, Gerard scored the sixth run in the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Rob Cordemans took over the Amsterdam-pitching. He struckout the first two hitters he faced to close in more on the All-Time StrikeOut-record. The righthander then walked Tijmen Takke and gave up a single to Jules Cremer, but closed with another strikeout.

With a comfortable 15-1 lead, Amsterdam Pirates needed three more outs in the bottom of the seventh to end the game via the mercy-rule. Instead, Quick Amersfoort rallied for four runs to narrow the deficit to 15-5. As the run-difference was still ten, the game ended after all. Three runs were unearned, but Rob Cordemans was responsible for that himself. Shairon Nicholas led off with a single, then scored on an one-out double by Wesley Bernardus. With two outs, Rachid Engelhardt hit a comebacker to Cordemans, which could have end the game. However, Cordemans made a throwing error to first base. That enable Bernardus to score, while Engelhardt reached second base. His brother Bryan Engelhardt then homered to make it a 15-5 score. A flyout ended the at bat to keep the mercy-rule run-difference intact and and the game.
