Neptunus wins in 8th inning to complete third sweep; Milestone for Benjamin Dille
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus broke a 3-3 tie with a 5-run eighth inning and won 8-4 against DSS on a chilly and rainy Sunday-afternoon (May 13). With the win, the league-leader completed its third sweep of the season and stayed unbeaten in nine games.

Neptunus opened the 3-game series on Thursday-afternoon with a 12-5 victory. The team then recorded a 9-0 shutout on Saturday.

Today, Neptunus led 3-0, but DSS came alongside in the fifth inning. Neptunus then rallied for five runs in the eighth to decide the game.

Neptunus collected 12 basehits today, including three by Dwayne Kemp and a homerun by Shaldimar Daantji. All nine players in the line-up had at least one basehit.

Neptunus' second baseman Benjamin Dille today played in his 500th official regular season-game in the Dutch big league. The Belgian infielder made his big league-debut in 2004 at age 17 with Neptunus. He then played for Sparta-Feyenoord, also in Rotterdam, in 2005. Dille, who also plays for the Belgian National Team, returned to Neptunus after the 2005 season and has played for the team since. Dille became the first foreign player to reach the 500-games mark in the highest Dutch league.

Before the game, Dille was honored by DSS. He will be honored by Neptunus before its next home-game coming Thursday-evening.

On a day with some drizzling rain, Neptunus got two baserunners in the top of the first inning off of starter Tom Stuifbergen. He walked two hitters, but they stranded on first and second base.

Neptunus opened the score in the second at bat off the righthander when Shaldimar Daantji led off with a homerun. Hereafter, Quintin De Cuba doubled. He moved to third base on an one-out grounder by Jochem Koedijk and scored when Stijn van der Meer reached on an error.

In the third inning, Neptunus added another run. With one out, Gianison Boekhoudt doubled and Dudley Leonora singled. Moments later, Boekhoudt scored on a wild pitch. With Leonora on second base, Shaldimar Daantji walked. The runners executed a double-steal, but then were left behind.

In the next four innings, Neptunus was held scoreless. The team got two runners in scoring position, but was unable to take more distance. In the fifth inning, Dwayne Kemp led off with a single, but later stranded on third base. In the sixth, with one out, Gregory Muller singled, but he was left behind on second base.

In the meantime, DSS initially was unable to score off of starter Elton Koeiman. The team got some runners, but didn't get into scoring position. In the second inning, Denzel Richardson led off with a single, but was caught stealing. In the fourth, two baserunners were forced out on second base.

DSS then struck in the bottom of the sixth fifth inning and came alongside, while it also had started to rain somewhat harder. Omar Williams and Tommy van de Sanden opened the at bat with singles, then both scored when Sander Paap followed with a double. With one out, Paap moved to third base on a grounder by Mitchel Dautzenberg, then scored the tying run when an error was made on a grounder by Kevin Nieveld.

With the score tied at 3-3, both teams went to the bullpen in the seventh inning. Tim Halderman took over for DSS, while rookie Jiorgeny Casimiri entered for Neptunus. Both became the pitcher-of-record, as Neptunus decided the game in the eighth inning.

Halderman got three baserunners in the seventh inning. The first one was caught stealing, the second was forced out and the third stranded on first base. Neptunus then struck with five runs in the eighth at bat. The first seven batters reached base safely, the first five off of Halderman. The righthander got the bases loaded quicky. After giving up a lead-off single to Shaldimar Daantji, he hit Quintin De Cuba and Gregory Muller with a pitch. Jochem Koedijk followed with a 2-run single, then two more runs were scored on a triple by Stijn van der Meer. That led to a pitching change. Mike Groen took over, but he was greeted with a runscoring single by Benjamin Dille that made it an 8-3 score. Dwayne Kemp became the seventh consecutive runner to reach base when he also singled. Hereafter, a flyout by Gianison Boekhoudt ended in a double play after a nice running catch from leftfielder Odion Gouverneur. Another flyout ended the at bat.

Jiorgeny Casimiri retired the side in both the seventh and eighth inning, then was relieved by Loek van Mil in the bottom of the ninth. He saw the first four hitters of DSS reach base and gave up a run. Tino van Erk led off with a walk, then Denzel Richardson singled. The bases got loaded when an error was made on what would be a force play-grounder by Devano Pieter. Van Mil then also walked Tommy van de Sanden, which enabled Van Erk to score. But Van Mil then followed with a strikeout and a double play ended the game.
