HCAW wins on wild pitch in 10th inning
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - HCAW failed to hold onto a 2-0 lead against DSS on Sunday-evening (May 20), but went on to win 4-3 in ten innings, thanks to a wild pitch.

HCAW opened the 3-game series on Thursday-evening with a 3-0 shutout-win. On Saturday, DSS scored six runs in the three middle innings and went on to win 6-2.

Today, HCAW led 2-0 when the seventh inning began, but DSS then came alongside. HCAW re-took the lead, but DSS again tied the score. In the tenth inning, HCAW scored the winning run with two outs on a wild pitch.

Before the start of the tenth inning, the game was interrupted for one of the famous sun-delays at the site of HCAW. Today, the delay lasted only 19 minutes.

Today's game started at 6 PM, as HCAW hosted its traditional international youth-tournament during this Pentecost-weekend.

HCAW collected 11 basehits, including three by Roelie Henrique, who with this raised his average to a league-leading .455.

The HCAW-defense turned a double play in the top of the first inning, then the team opened the score in the home half of the at bat. HCAW was unable to take more distance and led only 2-0 after six innings. Hereafter, DSS came alongside. The Haarlem-squad erased another small deficit in the eighth. The game was decided in the tenth inning with HCAW winning on a wild pitch with two outs.

In the bottom of the first inning, Jeandro Tromp led off with a walk for HCAW, then moved to third base when Delano Selassa singled. Moments later, Selassa was caught stealing and a grounder accounted for the second out. Vince Rooi followed with an infield-hit and that enabled Tromp to score the opening run.

HCAW left runners behind on first base in the next two innings, then got into scoring position again in the fourth off of starter Tim Halderman. Lead-off hitter Bryce Cherry was hit by a pitch, then reached second base safely on a sacrifice bunt by Berend Ruben, who himself ended up on first base. But the next two hitters were retired and a force play ended the at bat.

In the sixth, HCAW doubled its lead. Bryce Cherry led off with a triple and scored on sacrifice fly by Berend Ruben.

In the meantime, DSS was held scoreless in the first six innings by Chris Pfau. The American lefthander got some baserunners, but was supported with some fine defensive plays. HCAW turned a double play in the top of the first inning, but DSS got a runner on third base in the second at bat. Denzel Richardson led off with a walk, then stole second base with one out. With two outs, Sander Paap was hit by a pitch and moments later, Richardson stole third base. But a grounder ended the at bat.

In the third inning, DSS got a runner on first base with two outs, but Pfau closed with a strikeout. In the next at bat, Denzel Richardson led off with a single, but then was caught stealing after a successful pick-off by Pfau, who then struckout the next two hitters. He was supported with another double play in the fifth, then retired the side in the sixth.

As it had done several times earlier, DSS struck in the later innings. In the top of the seventh, the Haarlem-team scored twice to come alongside. This time, Denzel Richardson led off with a walk and scored on an one-out double by Kevin Nieveld. Shortly hereafter, Nieveld scored the tying run when Koen Werkman followed with a single. Werkman advanced to second base on the throw to the plate and later advanced on a grounder, but stranded on third base. Last year, Werkman was on the roster of HCAW. He then missed most of the season after suffering a severe injury in the opening weekend when he broke his scapula.

HCAW re-took the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Julian Goins led off with a single and came into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt by Jeandro Tromp. A pitching change followed, as Australian Greg Mosel took over from Tim Halderman. He got a comeback-grounder from Delano Selassa and was able to eliminate Goins on third base. With two outs, Selassa stole second base and scored on a following single by Roelie Henrique. While the run was scored off of Mosel, it was credited to Halderman. He became responsible for the runner who scored (Selassa) because of the fielder's choice-grounder from Selassa, which eliminated Halderman's runner (Goins).

The new lead was shortlived, as DSS came alongside in the top of the eighth inning after a pitching change. Oscar Meuris took over from Chris Pfau, but gave up a lead-off triple to Odion Gouverneur. Meuris followed with a strikeout, but then saw Gouverneur score the tying run on a grounder by Tino van Erk towards short. The ball was thrown to the plate, but Gouverneur was quicker and scored. With two outs, Omar Williams walked, but DSS left two runners behind.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, DSS turned a double play, then left a runner behind on second base in the top of the ninth. HCAW also stranded a runner on second base in its ninth and so, the game went into extra innings.

However, before the tenth went underway, the game was halted due to the bright setting sun. A 19-minute sun-delay followed.

In the top of the tenth inning, rookie Sem Robberse took the mound for HCAW. The righthander got two quick outs, but then gave up a double to Denzel Richardson. He stranded on second base.

In the bottom of the tenth, Robyn Clara became the new pitcher for DSS. He gave up a lead-off single to Roelie Henrique, but DSS then turned a double play. Next hitter Seb Visser reached on an error and Berend Ruben followed with a single. After having reached second base, Visser was replaced by Julian Rip, who played in his first game after having returned home some days earlier from the USA, where he attends college. Another pitching change followed and Mike Groen took over with runners on first and second base. Groen struckout Patrick Bok, but the third strike ended up in the ground for a wild pitch. This not only enabled Bok to reach first base and moved Ruben to second base, it also enabled Rip to score the winning run from second base!
