Neptunus wins twice on Day 2 Urbanus Tournament
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - Reigning champion Curaçao Neptunus recorded two victories on Saturday (April 21), the second day of the 36th edition of the annual, 3-day In Memoriam Charles Urbanus, Sr. Tournament.

On another sunny day, the Rotterdam-squad opened with a 6-2 victory against L&D Amsterdam Pirates, its opponent in last years Holland Series. Neptunus then nipped Hoofddorp Pioniers 4-3 in the next game.

Neptunus participates in the tournament for the first time since 2001. Neptunus Head Coach Ronald Jaarsma has a long association with HCAW, where he played for a long time and also coached. His father was the main-sponsor of the club for 30 years with his lunch-room Mr. Cocker. Jaarsma was the 3B Coach of Amsterdam Pirates for four seasons before making his debut as Head Coach of Neptunus last year.

Day 2 ended with a 5-1 victory for host HCAW against Hoofddorp Pioniers.

On Friday-evening (April 20), HCAW opened with a 5-3 win against Amsterdam Pirates.

The tournament closes with two games on Sunday.

Game 2 - L&D Amsterdam Pirates vs. Curaçao Neptunus

After stepping off the field around 10:30 PM on Friday-evening, Amsterdam Pirates was back on it less than twelve hours later for its next game against Neptunus on Saturday-morning. Neptunus won the game 3-0 and with that, the team also became the 'champion' of the exhibition season.

Neptunus was retired in order in the top of the first inning, then Amsterdam Pirates opened the score in its first at bat off of starter Diegomar Markwell. Remco Draijer led off with a single, then scored all the way from first base on a double down the leftfield-line by Nick Urbanus, who stranded on second base himself.

Neptunus came alongside with two outs in the top of the second inning off of starter Robin Schel, but also left three runners behind. With one out, Shaldimar Daantji doubled and scored on a 2-out single by Gregory Muller. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Jochem Koedijk walked and Shuruengelo Mingeli reached on an infield-hit. With this basehit, Mingeli made his debut in the Neptunus main-squad. Mingeli plays in the junior-squad of Unicorns Baseball Academy and was added to the roster for this tournament. A grounder ended the at bat and so, three runners were left behind.

In the bottom of the second inning, Amsterdam got on base again. Linoy Croes led off with a single, but a double play followed. Next hitter Aidan Finnegan then walked, but was left behind. Finnegan is a player the club's second team and was added to the roster for today's game.

Neptunus then struck with three runs on five basehits in the top of the third inning to decide the 6-inning game. With one out, Dwayne Kemp and Dudley Leonora singled to put runners at the corners. Shaldimar Daantji followed with a runscoring single to put Neptunus ahead 2-1. The bases got loaded when Quintin de Cuba reached on an infield-hit. Hereafter, Gregory Muller delivered the fifth consecutive basehit to bring in Leonora. Moments later, Daantji scored on a grounder by Jochem Koedijk to make it a 4-1 score.

Amsterdam got one run back in its third at bat. Remco Draijer led off with a double and advanced when an outfield-error was made. He then was eliminated at the plate trying to score on a grounder by Zerzinho Croes. With two outs, Croes scored on a double by Kenny Berkenbosch, who stranded on second base.

Both teams left a runner behind in scoring position in the fourth inning.

After Neptunus had left a runner on third base in the fifth, the team added an insurance run in the sixth. With two outs, Benjamin Dille singled and scored on a double by Dwayne Kemp.

In the fifth inning, Loek van Mil took over the Neptunian pitching and retired all six batters he faced.

Game 3 - Curaçao Neptunus vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers

In the second game, Neptunus trailed twice, but was able to come back and won 4-3 on a walk-off wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was a weird game in which several strikeouts almost went wrong, there were eight walks and also five wild pitches. Besides that, all pitchers needed a lot of pitches.

Both starting pitchers threw some strong innings, but then, their relievers gave up two runs and were credited with Blown Saves. Pioniers-starter Lars Huijer threw three hitless innings and struckout four hitters. Neptunus-starter Orlando Yntema was on the mound for five innings. He struckout eight batters and gave up only two basehits.

Pioniers got its first baserunner with two outs in the top of the second inning when Joey Eeman singled. He stole second base, but then was left behind.

The Hoofddorp-squad opened the score in the third at bat. With one out, Duco Nuijten struckout, but reached first base on a wild pitch. After he had stolen second base, another strikeout by Yntema almost went wrong. He struckout Mark Smit, but a throw to first base was needed to complete the out. On the throw, Nuijten moved to third base and he then scored when rookie Joey de Koning followed with a single.

Remarkably enough, three more strikeouts by Yntema needed an additional throw to first base from rookie catcher Joel Hernandez. One in the second inning and two more in the fourth. By the way, the first strikeout thrown by Huijer in the first inning also needed a throw to complete the out.

After having left behind a runner on second base in the fourth inning, Neptunus scored twice in the fifth at bat off of Angelo Wicklert, who had taken over the pitching in the previous inning. Stijn van der Meer then led off with a walk and Gregory Muller reached on an infield-hit. The two advanced on a wild pitch, then Van der Meer scored the tying run on a double by Quintin de Cuba. With one out, the next run was scored on a sacrifice fly by Jochem Koedijk.

Pioniers left runners behind on second and third base in the top of the sixth inning off of reliever Jiorgeny Casimiri. The team then scored twice in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead. Joey Eeman led off with a walk and stole second base. He moved to third base when this time a strikeout for Damian Melis ended in a wild pitch. With runners at the corners, Tyler Boersma singled to bring in the tying run. The two runners then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Duco Nuijten. A sacrifice fly by Mark Smit made it a 3-2 score in favor of Pioniers. It also brought in new pitcher Berry van Driel, who closed the at bat with a strikeout.

Shortly thereafter, Van Driel became the winning pitcher when new Pioniers-pitcher Gilian van Lith ran into problems. He began with walks for Gregory Muller and Shuruengelo Mingeli, who then executed a double-steal. Hereafter, a wild pitch enabled Muller to score the tying run and brough Mingeli to third base. Next hitter Joel Hernandez also walked and stole second base. Van Lith then uncorked another wild pitch and this time, it ended the game, as Mingeli scored the winning run.

Game 4 - Hoofddorp Pioniers vs. HCAW

In the final game of Day 2, HCAW won 5-1 against Hoofddorp Pioniers, which committed four errors. HCAW decided the game with a 4-run rally in the first inning.

In the opening at bat, HCAW scored four runs on only two basehits off of starter Dion Steijl, one of the six lefthanded pitchers on the active roster for coming season. Only one run was earned, as two errors contributed to the other three runs. Jeandro Tromp led off with a walk, then reached second base safely when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Delano Selassa, which resulted in runners on first and third base. Next, Selassa was forced out on a grounder by Roelie Henrique, but that also brought in Tromp. Veteran Vince Rooi followed with an RBI-double. Shortly hereafter, Rooi moved to third base on a wild pitch and Bryce Cherry was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Patrick Bok connected for a 2-run double to lift the lead to 4-0.

In the bottom of the second, Pioniers got one run back off of starter Kaj Timmermans. Steven Wharwood led off with a single and Leandro Anasagasti walked. Hereafter, Wharwood moved to third base when Anagasti was forced out on a grounder by Joey Eeman. The latter then stole second and when that was followed by a throwing error, Wharwood scored. Eeman stranded on second base and the hit by Wharwood was the lone one recorded by Pioniers in this game.

HCAW got the run back in the top of third inning. And again, it was unearned. Lead-off hitter Vince Rooi reached second base on a throwing error and moved to third on a single by Bryce Cherry. Hereafter, Seb Visser also singled to bring in Rooi and made it a 5-1 score. Cherry went on to move to third base on a grounder. Moments later, he tried to score after Kevin Weijgertse was flied out, but he was eliminated at the plate on a nice throw from centerfielder Mark Smit.

Pioniers made another inning-ending double play in the fourth, resulting in HCAW stranding a runner in scoring position. After being retired in order in the fifth by reliever Ryan Oduber, HCAW left another runner behind on second base in the sixth.

After giving up the run in the second inning, Kaj Timmermans retired the side in the next two innings. The righthander then walked Damian Melis with one out in the fifth, but closed by striking out the next two hitters.

Moreno Vork took over the HCAW-pitching in the sixth and also retired the side to end the game.
