Hoofddorp Pioniers splits on Day One in Nijmegen
Nederlands

NIJMEGEN (Neth.) - After weeks with cold, snow and freezing conditions, all eight Dutch big league-teams finally were able to play an exhibition game on Saturday (March 24). The weather conditions were very acceptable, at some sites still a little chilly, but on other locations very comfortable.

Hoofddorp Pioniers split its two games played on Day One of the 30th edition of the MFJP Jan van de Vegte Memorial Tournament, which is organized annually by De Hazenkamp in Nijmegen.

Pioniers opened the event with a big 12-0 win in four innings against the host-club. Hereafter, the Hoofddorp-squad lost 6-4 to Silicon Storks in a 7-inning game in the afternoon. Storks filled in today for Brasschaat Braves, which was unable to play today. The Belgian squad will travel to Nijmegen on Sunday to play its remaining two games.

The first day of the 2-day event ended with a 10-0 shutout-win in four innings of HCAW against De Hazenkamp.

Last year, HCAW finished in second place and Pioniers in third. The event was won by DSS.

In the opening game, Hoofddorp Pioniers recorded a convincing 12-0 shutout-victory in four innings. Games with a 10-run difference end after four complete innings or when the run difference is reached in the bottom of the fourth.

Pioniers collected 12 basehits in the game, including three by newcomer Jelle Kroft, who last season played for Onze Gezellen in the second hightest league ('Overgangsklasse'). Kroft scored twice and batted in four runs. Playing coach Mervin Gario and Steven Wharwood (another newcomer) both scored three runs.

De Hazenkamp produced only one basehit. After the team was retired in order by starter Lars Huijer in the first inning, Randy Dalnoot led off the second inning with a single. He advanced on a grounder, but then stranded on second base. Dalnoot, who in the past has played in the Dutch big league for PSV, remained the lone baserunner for the home team. Huijer struckout three hitters.

Pioniers opened the score with three unearned runs in the top of the first inning off of starter Lenko Elisabeth. With two outs, Mervin Gario was hit by a pitch and advanced to third base when a pick-off ended in an error. He then scored the first run when next hitter Steven Wharwood reached on an error, which would have been the third out. Next, Jelle Kroft singled and rookie Joey de Koning followed with a 2-run double.

Two runs were added in the third at bat. With one out, Gario walked and Wharwood singled. The two moved on a wild pitch, then both scored on a single by Kroft to make it a 5-0 score.

In the top of the fourth inning, Pioniers staged a 7-run rally on seven basehits. With one out, Mark Smit doubled and Ibrahim Redan walked. Redan is a pitcher, but he entered the game as leftfielder in the third inning. Gario and Wharwood followed with runscoring singles and Kroft added a 2-run single. When next hitter De Koning doubled, a pitching change followed. Theo Vrolijk took over, but he was greeted with a 2-run double by Angelo Wicklert, who later scored himself on a 2-out single by Duco Nuijten to increase the lead to 12-0.

After Lars Huijer had pitched the first two innings for Pioniers, Gilian van Lith threw the next two. The lefthander retired six batters in a row.

Game 2 - Hoofddorp Pioniers vs. Silicon Storks

In the second game of the tournament, Silicon Storks had two 3-run rallies and hold onto its lead, winning 6-4 against Hoofddorp Pioniers. For Storks, this was its lone game in the event, as it filled in for Brasschaat Braves today. The Belgian squad will be in Nijmegen on Sunday.

Two weeks ago, Storks opened its exhibition season with an 8-6 win against Curaçao Neptunus and now is the leader in the exhibition season with a 2-0 record.

Storks opened the score with a 3-run rally in the top of the first inning off of starter Dion Steijl. The lefthander gave up a lead-off single to Quinlan de Windt, who then moved to third base when a pick-off ended in a throwing error. De Windt was unable to advance when next hitter Tijani Dunlop reached on an infield-hit. Runai Coran then connected well, but his line drive was caught by second baseman Stephen Henson. Hereafter, Dunlop was forced out on a grounder by Kendrick Delima, but that also enabled De Windt to score the first run. Next, Aldrich Guzman singled and Jurriaan Dijk followed with a 2-run double to make it a 3-0 score.

Pioniers got one run back in its first at bat off of starter Martin Kram. Mark Smit led off with a triple and scored on a grounder by Ibrahim Redan. Kram had a strong outing in the three innings he pitched, as he retired nine consecutive hitters after giving the triple.

Steijl retired the side in the second and third inning, then was relieved by Venezuelan righthander Alexander Valdes. He threw the fourth inning and gave up three more runs. Kendrick Delima led off with a single and Jurriaan Dijk singled with one out. The two scored on a following triple by Philip Brandl. Giovanny Perez then walked and would have been forced out on a grounder by Tyron de Windt, but an error was made. On this grounder, Brandl scored the next run to lift the lead to 6-1.

Angelo Wicklert threw the final three innings for Pioniers and held Storks scoreless. He saw Storks get two runners in scoring position in the fifth with two outs, but then closed with a strikeout. Wicklert did fine hereafter, as he retired the side in the next two innings.

Trailing 6-1, Pioniers narrowed the deficit to 6-4 by scoring three runs in the fifth at bat. All were unearned, as two errors contributed to the scoring. Pioniers scored the runs off of Darryl Jamoena, who last year pitched for the Hoofddorp-squad. With one out, he got the bases loaded when Stephen Henson singled, Damian Melis reached on an error and Duco Nuijten reached on an infield-hit. A run was then scored when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Mark Smit. A sacrifice fly by Ibrahim Redan and a single by Mervin Gario then led to two more runs. However, the inning ended when Smit was eliminated at third base trying to advance on Gario's basehit.

In the sixth inning, off of new pitcher Gijs Timmer, Pioniers got its first two hitters on base, but they stranded on second and third base. In the seventh (and last) inning, Duco Nuijten led off for Pioniers with a single, but also was left behind.

HCAW collected seven basehits, including three by newcomer Bryce Cherry, who was 3-for-3, including an inside-the-park-homerun. Cherry, who last season played for UVV, joined HCAW two weeks ago. Veteran player Vince Rooi was 2-for-3 for HCAW, scored twice and also batted in two.

Dennis Burgersdijk started for HCAW. In the top of the first inning, he walked lead-off hitter Jurigson Mathilda. He advanced on a wild pitch and moved to third base on a grounder, but then was left behind. After the walk, Burgersdijk, who came to HCAW from Amsterdam Pirates, retired seven consecutive hitters, three of them with a strikeout. With one out in the third inning, he walked Robert Michel, but he stranded on second base.

After Burgersdijk had thrown three hitless innings, Moreno Vork took over in the fourth. With two outs, Vork gave up a single to Roderick Michel, who accounted for the lone basehit of De Hazenkamp.

HCAW opened the score with five runs in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Albert Janga. Four runs were unearned due to a defensive error. With one out, new comer Berend Ruben singled, moved on a wild pitch and scored the first run on a single by Roelie Henrique. Vince Rooi followed with another single. The two runners advanced on a grounder, then both scored when Seb Visser reached on an error, which would have been the third out. Hereafter, two more runs were added when Bryce Cherry hit a 2-run, inside-the-park-homerun.

HCAW scored four more runs in the second inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Vince Rooi delivered a 2-run single and Patrick Bok followed with a runscoring single. Bok is another player who last season played for Amsterdam Pirates. With two outs, a single by Bryce Cherry lifted the lead to 9-0.

The game ended with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning due to the 10-run difference mercy-rule. With one out, the bases got loaded when Seb Visser walked, Bryce Cherry singled and Kevin Weijgertse also walked. The game then ended when pinch-hitter Julian Goins also walked, making it a 10-0 score.
