BOCA CHICA, Santo Domingo Province (Dominican Republic) - Dutch professional infielder Oliver van der Wijst Severino has been released on Wednesday (June 27) by the Houston Astros. So far, the 20-year old infielder played for DSL Astros in the Dominican Summer League, which is a Rookie League.

This season, Van der Wijst Severino played in ten games since the start of the season earlier this month. The righthanded hitter batted .231 (6-for-26) with two doubles and one triple. He scored five runs and batted in three.

Van der Wijst played his last game last Tuesday when the Astros won 6-5 against DSL Braves. In that game, he batted 2-for-4 and scored once. The next day, he was released.

Van der Wijst was signed by the Astros in March 2017. In July, he made his professional debut playing for DSL Astros Orange in the Dominican Republic. In his first season, he played in 35 games and batted .273 (27-for-99) with six doubles and two homeruns.

In 2014, Van der Wijst made his debut in the Dutch big league at age 16 when he played for L&D Amsterdam Pirates. He then was inserted as pinch-hitter in a game against HCAW and singled in his first at bat, which also would be his lone at bat at the highest level that year. Van der Wijst played in the Rookie League-team of Amsterdam Pirates, then transfered to Kinheim after the 2014 season. With Kinheim, he played the entire 2015 season in its Rookie League-team. The infielder then played in the big league for Kinheim in 2016, hitting .173 in 27 games.

After the 2016 season, Van der Wijst transfered to Hoofddorp Pioniers, but then was signed to a professional contract. He didn't play for Pioniers in the regular season, but he joined the team in the Championship Round after completion of his professional season. The infielder played in 12 games and batted .200.

When he is not signed by another club, it is possible that Van der Wijst will return to the Netherlands. He is then eligible to play again for Hoofddorp Pioniers.
