HCAW wins twice on first day Ringvaart Tournament
Nederlands

HEEMSTEDE (Neth.) - On Saturday (March 31), the first day of the annual Ringvaart Tournament, HCAW recorded two victories.

The team from Bussum shutout Hoofddorp Pioniers 3-0 in its first game, thanks to a great pitching outing by Dennis Burgersdijk.

In its second game, HCAW won 4-3 against organisor RCH-Pinguïns. Trailing 3-2, HCAW scored twice in what would be the final at bat in the game.

The day began with a 3-1 win of Pioniers against RCH-Pinguïns.

Initially, L&D Amsterdam Pirates was to be the fourth participant in this tournament. However, the vice-champion withdraw from the event on Wednesday, as the team is not ready yet to play what would have been four games in the original schedule. So far, Amsterdam has played only one exhibition game due to the cold weather conditions of the previous weeks and also because its home site is currently unavailable, as an artificial infield is installed.

Game 1 - RCH-Pinguïns vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers

Hoofddorp Pioniers opened the first game of the event with one run in the top of the first inning. After the first two hitters had flied out, player/coach Mervin Gario connected well and hit a homerun off of starter Lars Broersen.

In the second inning, Joey de Koning led off for Pioniers with a single, stole second base and reached third on a wild pitch, but was left behind.

Pioniers took some more distance in the third at bat, adding two runs. Rookie Leandro Anasagasti led off with a double and moved on a grounder. With two outs, Mervin Gario walked and stole second base. Anasagasti and Gario then both scored when Jelle Kroft followed with a single to make it a 3-0 score.

In the next two innings, Pioniers left a runner behind in scoring position. In the fourth, Mark Smit reached on a fielder's choice, but stranded on second base. In the fifth, Stephen Henson (with one out) and Jelle Kroft (with two outs) both walked, but a force out ended the inning.

RCH-Pinguïns was held hitless in the first four innings by Lars Huijer, who struckout eight hitters. The righthander saw three hitters reach base on an error and another one on a fielder's choice, but only one of them got into scoring position. That was in the bottom of the fourth inning. Daan Groenewoud and Gianni Frolijk then both reached on an error, but Huijer struckout the next three hitters.

Ryan Oduber took over the pitching in the fifth. With one out, he gave up a single to Jaison Gijsbertha, who moved on a passed ball. With two outs, Oduber walked Jeldwin Orman, then gave up a runscoring single to Daan Groenewoud, but that was to be it for the organizing club.

Game 2 - Hoofddorp Pioniers vs. HCAW

In its next game, Hoofddorp Pioniers was shutout 3-0 by HCAW.

Dennis Burgersdijk threw a strong game for the Bussum-club. The righthander went the distance and threw a 6-inning No-Hitter. Burgersdijk, who came over from Amsterdam Pirates, missed a Perfect Game by allowing one hitter to reach base on a walk.

After having retired the side in the first inning, Burgersdijk walked lead-off hitter Jelle Kroft in the second inning. Hereafter, the HCAW-defense turned a double play and Burgersdijk retired the last 14 consecutive batters in order!

HCAW also was retired in order in its first at bat by Dion Steijl. The lefthander then gave up a run in the next inning. Vince Rooi led off with a double, moved on a grounder and scored on a single by Berend Ruben. The latter was then awarded second base on a balk and reached third base on a grounder, but was left behind.

HCAW doubled its lead in the third inning. Jeandro Tromp led off with a walk, moved on a single by Delano Selassa and a sacrifice bunt by Roelie Henrique, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Vince Rooi.

HCAW added its third run in the fifth inning off of Alex Valdez, who had taken over in the previous inning. HCAW got four baserunners in this at bat, but scored only once. Julian Goins led off with a walk and stole second base, then Jeandro Tromp also walked. The latter was then eliminated in a double play on a grounder by Delano Selassa. That brought Goins to third base and he scored when Roelie Henrique reached on an error. After the latter had stolen second base, Vince Rooi walked. The two runners moved on a wild pitch, but stranded on second and third base.

Game 3 - HCAW vs. RCH-Pinguïns

In its second game of the day, HCAW came from behind to win 4-3 against RCH-Pinguïns to record its second victory.

After both teams were retired in order in the first inning, RCH-Pinguïns got a runner in scoring position in the second at bat off of starter Oscar Meuris. With one out, Jordan Illis singled and stole second base. Last year, Illis began the season with DSS, but then transfered to UVV in June. While at second base, Illis was eliminated on a pick-off by Meuris.

HCAW then opened the score with two runs in the bottom of the second inning off of starter Marvin Brown. Veteran Vince Rooi led off with a homerun. Hereafter, Brown hit next hitter Roland Laurens with a pitch, then walked Seb Visser. Moments later, Visser also became a victim of a pick-off. After Laurens had moved to third base on a wild pitch, Patrick Bok walked. Laurens scored the second run when Kevin Weijgertse followed with a single.

RCH-Pinguïns got one run back in the third inning. With one out, Jaison Gijsbertha and Jayzon Allee both singled. The bases got loaded when Jedlwin Orman was hit by a pitch. Daan Groenewoud followed with a runscoring single, which kept the bases loaded. Meuris avoided giving up more runs, as former HCAW-player Gianni Frolijk grounded in a double play.

In the fourth inning, RCH-Pinguïns scored twice off of reliever Timo van Ancum to take a 3-2 lead. Rossini Frolijk (another former HCAW-player) and Jordan Illis both singled and advanced on a wild pitch. Frolijk then scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Joshua Zara and Joey Kuijsten followed with an RBI-single to give RCH-Pinguïns the lead.

After HCAW was retired in order in its fourth at bat, RCH-Pinguïns appeared to do some more scoring in the top of the fifth off of new pitcher Seb Visser, who got the bases loaded. With one out, he gave up a double to Daan Groenewoud, then hit Gianni Frolijk with a pitch and walked Rossini Frolijk, which loaded the bases. An infield-fly followed on a pop-fly by Jordan Illis and the inning ended with a force play-grounder from Joshua Zara.

In the bottom of the fifth, HCAW erased the deficit off of new pitcher Luca van der Schouw. With one out, Jeandro Tromp was hit by a pitch, stole second base and moved to third base on a grounder by Delano Selassa. Hereafter, Roelie Henrique walked and also stole second base. A wild pitch enabled Tromp to score the tying run. Henrique advanced to third base and scored the winning run on a walk-off single by Berend Ruben.
