NEW YORK, New York (USA) - Short stop Xander Bogaerts (Boston Red Sox) has been added to the American League-roster for the upcoming All Star Game, which will be played coming Tuesday (July 9) in Cleveland. Also added were second baseman Brandon Lowe (Tampa Bay Rays) and pitcher José Berrios (Minnesota Twins). The additions were announced on Wednesday-afternoon (July 3).

The three players were named as replacements for Tommy La Stella (Los Angeles Angels), Jake Odorizzi (Minnesota Twins) and Hunter Pence (Texas Rangers), who are all unavailable to participate due to injuries. Pence was voted to be the starting designated hitter, but he has a groin injury, while Odorizzi has an injury to his right middle finger.

La Stella, who was selected for the first time for an All Star Game, got injured on Tuesday-evening when he hit a foul ball off his right leg in the sixth inning. He sustained a fractured right tibia and will be out for 8 to 10 weeks. The injury came in the first game the Angels played after tragedy struck on Monday when 27-old pitcher Tyler Skaggs was found dead in his hotel room in Southlake (Texas). The Angels had just arrived there on Sunday-evening for a 4-game series against Texas Rangers, which was to begin on Monday-evening. The first game of the series was cancelled and postponed to a later date. Skaggs started for the Angels on Saturday against Oakland Athletics. After completion on Sunday's home-game, the team flew to Texas.

This is the second time that Bogaerts is selected to play in the All Star Game. In 2016, he started the All Star Game and was 1-for-2 with a double.

At the moment, Bogaerts leads the American League in doubles (28), is in seventh place with basehits (95) and second in runs scored (64). The Aruban-born infielder is hitting .301 with 16 homeruns and 58 runs batted in and has an on-base percentage of .392.

Bogaerts will be the lone player from the Netherlands to play in this years All Star Game.
