HCAW productive in third game against Hoofddorp Pioniers
Nederlands

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - HCAW had a productive afternoon, but decided the game in the final three at bats to win 5-1 against Hoofddorp Pioniers on Sunday (May 5).

The previous two games ended in a tie.

The opening game of the 3-game series on Thursday-evening ended in a 6-6 tie in a game that ended after ten innings due to the curfew-rule.

On Saturday, the second game ended in a scoreless tie after 12 innings. It was the first time in almost 17 years that a game in the highest league ended with an 0-0 score.

Today was National Liberation Day in the Netherlands. On this day, the ending of World War II is celebrated. Throughout the country, there are several activities and festivals to celebrate freedom.

HCAW led 2-0 after three innings, then took more distance by adding three runs from the seventh inning on. In the meantime, Hoofddorp Pioniers was held scoreless in eight innings by Dennis Burgersdijk, who threw his first 9-inning complete game in almost seven years. This was only the fourth complete game in the career of Burgersdijk, who made his big league-debut in 2006. Since then, he played for ADO, RCH, Almere '90, HCAW, UVV, ADOLakers, Amsterdam Pirates and since last season again for HCAW.

In these fourteen seasons, he started almost 100 games, but completed only four. He pitched his last complete game on July 24, 2014 when he threw seven innings for ADOLakers against UVV. But he threw his last (and only other) 9-inning complete game on June 16, 2012 when he also played for HCAW in a 7-4 win against Sparta-Feyenoord. Only one player watched Burgersdijk throw nine complete innings in 2012 and today. That was Seb Visser, who then and today was the third baseman for HCAW. Visser left the team after the 2012 season to play for DSS, but returned to the Bussum-club in 2017. Back then and today, Huub Nelissen was the Official Scorer.

HCAW opened the score with one run in the top of the second inning off of starter Lars Broersen. With two outs, Seb Visser singled and the bases then got loaded when Ruendrick Piternella and Arthur Lugtmeijer both walked. The run was then scored when next batter Renaigel Martis also walked. However, three runners were left behind when a flyout ended the inning.

HCAW doubled its lead in the third inning. With one out, Oliver van der Wijst Severino singled and stole second base. He then reached third base safely on a fielder's choice-grounder by Rodney Daal. Van der Wijst scored when Daal was forced out on a grounder by Patrick Bok.

HCAW got a chance to do some more scoring in the sixth inning, but again left three runners behind. With one out and Ruendrick Piternella (fielder's choice) on first base, Arthur Lugtmeijer walked and Renaigel Martis reached on a bunt-single. With the bases loaded, Nick Loos took over the Hoofddorp-pitching. He got a grounder that led to a force out at the plate, then a flyout ended the inning.

The Bussum-team then added a run in the seventh. The bases got loaded when Oliver van der Wijst Severino, Rodney Daal and Patrick Bok all singled. With one out, the run was scored when Ruendrick Piternella walked. The inning ended with a double play and so, HCAW stranded two more runners.

HCAW took more distance by scoring two runs in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, Jeandro Tromp and Bob van der Meer both singled. Tromp scored on a single by Oliver van der Wijst Severino, then Van der Meer also scored when an outfield-error followed.

Dennis Burgersdijk retired the first nine batters in a row. In the fourth, he saw lead-off hitter Mark Smit reach on an error, but he stranded on third base.

The righthander gave up his first basehit in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tyler Boersma led off with a single, then Duco Nuijten reached on an error. The two advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Joey Eeman, but then were left behind.

Pioniers left runners behind on first and second base in the sixth inning. The team got into scoring position again in the bottom of the ninth inning and then also scored its lone run. With one out, Tyler Boersma and Duco Nuijten both singled. The run was then scored when next batter Joey Eeman also singled. But the game then ended when Jaison Gijsbertha grounded into a double play.

And with that, there also was some success for Dè Flanegin, who this season is the new Head Coach of HCAW. Flanegin played his entire 20-plus year career for Pioniers and was the team's Head Coach in 2016-2017.
