Amsterdam Pirates advances to Semi-Final European Champions Cup after winning huge
Nederlands

CASTENASO (Italy) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates recorded a very convinving and huge 22-2 win against Ostrava Arrows (Czech Republic) on Thursday (June 6) to advance to the Semi-Final of the European Champions Cup.

For Amsterdam, this was the second big win in two days after winning 17-0 on Wednesday against Deurne Spartans (Belgium).

In today's game, Amsterdam Pirates rallied for ten runs in the third at bat, then added nine more in the fourth at bat.

The team collected 20 basehits, including three by Roelie Henrique, Gilmer Lampe and Kenny Berkenbosch. The three also batted in the most runs, Berkenbosch 6, Lampe 5 and Henrique 4. Berkenbosch, Lampe (grand slam) and Denzel Richardson all homered for the Amsterdam-squad. Henrique scored four runs.

All nine starting players scored at least once and hit at least one basehit. Seven players scored two or more runs. Eight players batted in one or more runs. The lone player without an RBI was Max Clarijs. Otherwise, all players would have had at least one run scored, one RBI and one basehit.

Because of the 15-run difference mercy-rule, the game ended after 4½ inning.

In the evening, host UnipolSai Fortitudo Bologna played against Deurne Spartans (Belgium). The Italians almost surely will be the second Semi-Finalist, as Deurne had to score a lot of runs in case of a win to move passed both Bologna and Ostrava.

Schedule, Standings & Scores

Amsterdam scored three runs in the first inning, then Ostrava narrowed the deficit to 3-2, but that was to be it for the Czech team. Amsterdam rallied for ten runs in the third and added nine more in the fourth to record the most runs in one game by one team during this tournament.

After the game, Amsterdam led the tournament with 41 runs scored, 39 basehits and a .443 batting average.

Amsterdam Pirates set the tone by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Roelie Henrique and Sharlon Schoop began with walks, then Gilmer Lampe followed with a runscoring single. With one out, the next run was scored on a sacrifice fly by Kenny Berkenbosch and Delano Selassa added an RBI-double.

Ostrava Arrows got one run back in the top of the second inning off of lefthander Jim Ploeger, who went the distance for Pirates. He walked lead-off hitter Jakub Malik, then gave up a single to Michael Vykoukal. With one out, Ploeger got the bases loaded when he hit Radim Novotny with a pitch. The run was scored moments later on a sacrifice fly by Ales Navratil.

In the third inning, the Czechs narrowed the deficit to 3-2 when Terrell Joyce homered with one out. He was the last player to hit a basehit or to reach base, as Ploeger retired the next eight batters in a row.

Amsterdam Pirates then struck with ten runs on nine basehits off of three pitchers in the bottom of the third inning. Seven of the runs were scored on three homeruns. Eight of the runs were scored with two outs. With one out, Denzel Richardson reached on an error, then scored when Kenny Berkenbosch followed with a homerun. Due to the error on Richardson's hit, eight runs became so-called team unearned. This means, they were unearned for the team, but were earned for the respective pitchers who gave up the runs. In case one pitcher would have thrown this inning, nine runs would have been unearned. After the homerun by Berkenbosch, Alexander Sin took over the pitching from starter Marko Vykoukal. Sin walked Delano Selassa, then got the bases loaded when he gave up a single to Linoy Croes and also walked Niels van Weert. Hereafter, Sin struckout next batter Max Clarijs, but then gave up a 2-run single to Roelie Henrique. The bases got loaded again when Sharlon Schoop singled. This time, Gilmer Lampe followed with a grand slam homerun! That also led to the next pitching change. Martin Kubovcik took over, but he was greeted with a homerun by Denzel Richardson, which was his second in the tournament. The scoring wasn't over yet, as Kenny Berkenbosch, Delano Selassa and Linoy Croes all followed with a single to bring in the tenth run in the at bat. Berkenbosch and Croes both had two basehits in this inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Amsterdam Pirates scored nine more runs on eight basehits. With one out, the bases got loaded when Roelie Henrique singled, Sharlon Schoop walked and Gilmer Lampe also singled. A run was then scored when Denzel Richardson walked and hereafter, Kenny Berkenbosch cleared the bases with a 3-run triple. With two outs, the next runs were scored on a double by Linoy Croes and a single by Niels van Weert. After Max Clarijs had also singled, it was Roelie Henrique who hit a 2-run triple and scored himself on a double by Sharlon Schoop to lift the lead to 22-2.
