During Game 2 of last years American League Division Series against Boston Red Sox, Gregorius sustained an injury to his right elbow. He then stayed in the game and also played in the following two games of the Series.

On October 17, the short stop underwent Tommy John-surgery. With that, it was expected that he would be out of action for the first part of the 2019 season. In recent weeks, it was reported that he might return in a period from June through August.

In the past months, his recovery went very well. The 29-year old Gregorius worked hard to recover and on his comeback at the Yankees Spring Training-facility in Tampa, Florida. He was then assigned to Tampa Tarpons, the Single-A team of the Yankees for whom he played on May 25 and 26. In these games, Gregorius batted 2-for-7, which included a homerun.

Gregorius then joined Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, the Triple-A team of the Yankees. On May 29, he played in his first of six games for the team. Gregorius, who also worked on strenghtening his arm, batted 3-for-25 in Triple-A. On Wednesday, he was 2-for-4 and scored a run for the team.

Didi Gregorius plays professionally since 2008. He made his Major League-debut in 2012 playing in eight games for Cincinnati Reds. Gregorius then played for Arizona Diamondbacks in 2013 and 2014. Since 2015, he plays for New York Yankees.

Through last season, Gregorius has played in 769 Major League-games. He recorded 739 basehits, including 94 homeruns. Gregorius scored 370 runs and bated in 356.

With his comeback on Friday, Gregorius almost surely also will be on the Yankees-roster for the 2-game series against Boston in London, England on June 29 and 30.
