HCAW adds Aruban pitcher Gillian Wernet to roster

BUSSUM (Neth.) - HCAW has added righthanded pitcher Gillian Wernet to its big league-roster, the club announced on Saturday (July 6). The 20-year old Aruban-born player arrived on Saturday-morning and joined his new team in the afternoon. At HCAW, Wernet probably will be used as a reliever. Last Thursday-evening, HCAW officially qualified for the Play-Offs after winning the opener of its 3-game series against Silicon Storks with a 7-0 score.

In its home-game against Silicon Storks on Saturday-afternoon, Wernet was inserted in the bottom of the eighth inning as a pinch-hitter. He walked and was replaced by a pinch-runner after reaching first base. Beforehand, it was not planned to use Wernet in today's game. However, with HCAW leading 6-1, the team inserted Wernet to make him officially eligible to play for the team in the remainder of the season. Players have to play for a club before July 16 to be eligible to play for a team after that date at the big league-level and the postseason.

Gillian Wernet was released on July 1 by the Baltimore Orioles, where he played in the Rookie League this season.

Wernet signed a professional contract with the Orioles in August 2015. The righthander then made his professional debut in 2016 when he played for the second of two teams of the Orioles in the Dominican Summer League, which is a Rookie League. In his first season, Wernet was 2-2 in 14 games (all starts) and struckout 32 batters in 57 2/3 inning.

In 2017, the Aruban pitcher played in the Gulf Coast League in Florida in the their based Orioles Rookie League-team. In that season, he was only used as a middle reliever (13 games) and was 0-1 with 16 strikeouts.

Last year, Wernet played in the Orioles Rookie League-teams in both Florida and the Dominican Republic. He then pitched in ten games (six starts) and was 2-3 with a 4.55 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 27 2/3 inning.

This season, Wernet appeared in only one game for the GCL Orioles. On June 24, the Orioles led 11-1 halfway the fourth inning against the GCL Braves. Wernet then took over the pitching in the bottom of the fourth. He threw 1/3 inning in relief and gave up four hits and six (earned) runs, while walking two batters and striking out one. The Orioles won the game with a 17-9 score.

Last year, Gillian Wernet was one of the pitchers on the roster of the Netherlands U23 Team during the U23 World Championship in Colombia. During that event, Wernet pitched in four games for the Orange-squad, all in relief, against Mexico, South Africa, Australia and Puerto Rico. In total, the righthander pitched five innings in which he gave up six earned runs and five basehits (one homerun), while striking out six batters and walking five.
