Kinheim scores 37 runs against The Hawks in Opening Weekend
Nederlands

HAARLEM / DORDRECHT (Neth.) - Kinheim opened the 2019 season in the 'Overgangsklasse' (second highest league) in the weekend with two big shutout-wins against The Hawks. The Haarlem-team opened on Saturday (April 6) at home with a 10-0 win, then crushed the opponent the next day in Dordrecht with a huge 27-0 victory.

In the first weekend of the season of the 16-team league, eight teams won twice.

Last season, Kinheim finished in first place to qualify for the Promotion/Relegation Series against Silicon Storks, which ended up in last place of the Relegation Pool of the Dutch big league. In the best-of-five, Storks won 3-1 to stay in the highest division.

Kinheim, which is one of the oldest clubs in the country, last played in the Dutch big league in 2016. It then withdraw its team from the 2017 season after many players had left. From 2017 on, Kinheim plays in the 'Overgangsklasse'.

This year, Kinheim again is a strong contender for the top-position, as is RCH-Pinguïns from Heemstede. This team opened the season with two wins against Omron Pioniers (12-5, 13-1).

Euro Stars, which last year finished in fourth place of the Top-8 Pool, opened the new season with two small losses (9-7, 9-8) against Wassenaar, which in 2018 finished in seventh place.

Kinheim vs. The Hawks

In the opener on Saturday, Kinheim reached base quickly in the first inning. The Hawks-starter Jari Krutzen began with walks Thomas Bos and Bram Blokker. The two got into scoring position after a double-steal, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeldwin Orman and a single by Wesley van Hemert.

Orman joined Kinheim after last season when he played for RCH-Pinguïns. In 2015, he briefly played for The Hawks, which then played in the big league, but relegated. From that team, only outfielder Wijnand Ruben is still playing for The Hawks. Six players from the 2015 team of The Hawks are currently playing in the big league, being Mitchell Berghmans (Quick Amersfoort), Julian Goins (Neptunus), Odion Gouverneur, Brian Raap (both DSS), José Moreno (Storks) and Berend Ruben (HCAW).

After Kinheim was retired in order in the second inning, three runs were added in the third at bat. The bases got loaded when Thomas Bos and Bram Blokker singled and Jeldwin Orman was hit by a pitch. A run was then scored on a bunt-single by Wesley van Hemert and a walk for Marcel Tolenaars accounted for the next run. The fifth run was scored when Jenk Lemmink grounded into a double play.

With two outs in the fourth inning and Thomas Bos (hit by pitch) and Bram Blokker (walk) on base, Jeldwin Orman delivered a 2-run double to lift the lead to 7-0.

With two outs in the fifth, two more runs were scored off of new pitcher Wouter van Buitenen. Marcel Tolenaars reached on an error and Jenk Lemmink walked. With two outs, it was Nick Hofer, who hit a 2-run double.

In the bottom of the seventh, the 10-run difference was reached. With one out and Jenk Lemmink (fielder's choice) on first base, the bases got loaded when Chiel Berkhout and Mart Wedman both walked. The game then ended when Nick Hofer hit a walk-off sacrifice fly.

Martijn Schoonderwoerd went the distance for Kinheim. The righthander gave up five basehits and allowed only one runner to get into scoring position. That happened in the fourth inning. With one out, Mika Krutzen singled, but later stranded on second base.

Wijnand Ruben produced two of the five hits for The Hawks. But in the second inning, he was caught stealing and in the fifth, he was picked off first base by Schoonderwoerd.

For Kinheim, Thomas Bos scored three runs and stole five bases. Bram Blokker also scored three runs for the home-team. Jeldwin Orman and Nick Hofer both batted in three runs.

The Hawks vs. Kinheim

On Sunday, Kinheim collected 19 basehits off of four pitchers and went on to win 27-0. Lead-off hitter Thomas Bos was 5-for-6 with two doubles, reached base six times and scored five runs. Jeldwin Orman also reached base six times and was 3-for-5, while Sven Moerkerk reached base five times.

Marcel Tolenaars scored four runs and batted in three runs. Thomas Bos, Bram Blokker and Nick Hofer also batted in three runs in this very lopsided game.

The Hawks also suffered a big shutout-loss in the opening weekend of last season. The team then lost 16-0 in its first game against RCH-Pinguïns, also on April 7. This also was the biggest shutout-win in the 2018 season. There are was a score with 25 or more runs in that same weekend, as Euro Stars won 25-4 against UVV.

Last year, there were ten games in which a team scored 20 or more runs. Kinheim scored the most runs in one game last season, winning 28-2 against UVV on April 21.

Kinheim rallied for seven runs in the top of the first inning off of starter Jesper Krutzen. Thomas Bos led off with a single and with one out, the bases got loaded when Jeldwin Orman was hit by a pitch and Wesley van Hemert walked. The first run was then scored when Marcel Tolenaars also was hit by a pitch. Hereafter, Jenk Lemmink and Sven Moerkerk produced runscoring singles. The next run was added on a basesloaded walk for Mart Wedman. The lead was increased to 7-0 when Nick Hofer delivered a baseclearing, 3-run double.

Three runs were added in the second inning, highligted by RBI-doubles from Tolenaars and Wedman.

After scoring 'only' one run in the third and fourth inning, Kinheim rallied for six more runs in the fifth inning. In this at bat, five batters walked. There were three basehits, including a 2-run double by Thomas Bos.

An 8-run rally followed in the sixth inning off of the third pitcher in the game of The Hawks. This time, three defensive errors contributed. Five basehits were recorded in this as bat, including a 2-run double by Bram Blokker.

The 27th and final run was scored in the top of the seventh, With one out, Thomas Bos reached base on his fifth basehit in the game, advanced on a wild pitch and a grounder and scored on a single by Jeldwin Orman.

Veteran Al Morales Gomes started for Kinheim. The 40-year old Mexican-born righthander, who pitched in the big league for RCH, Hoofddorp Pioniers and Amsterdam Pirates, struckout seven batters and gave up two hits. Again, like on Saturday, it was Wijnand Ruben, who was the most productive hitter for The Hawks. He singled in the first inning and doubled in the third to account for the only basehits his team recorded in this game.

With one out in the first inning, Mika Krutzen walked and Wijnand Ruben singled, but Morales closed with two strikeouts. With two outs in the third, Ruben hit a double, then a grounder ended the at bat. From that moment on, 13 batters were retired in order and The Hawks didn't get another baserunner in this game.
