HOOFDDORP (Neth.) -
Former baseball-umpire Jos Loogman passed away on Saturday, May 11 at the age of 76.
The memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 16 at 10:30 AM in Crematorium Haarlemmermeer at the Hoofdweg 1100 in Nieuw-Vennep.
Johannes Gerardus Maria (Jos) Loogman was born on October 19, 1942 and has been involved in baseball for many years.
While playing baseball himself, Jos Loogman often also officiated at club-games as an umpire.
Besides playing baseball, Loogman also coached youth-teams for some time and later played softball for several seasons at Amsterdam Pirates.
In the seventies, he decided to start umpiring and did so in the Rayon Amsterdam, making his debut in 1975.
Loogman showed talent and promoted, then started umpiring at the national level in 1977.
In his umpiring career, Loogman mostly led games in the second and third highest baseball-league, the so-called First Division and Second Division.
But through the years, he also was assigned to several games in the Dutch big league.
Jos Loogman was known for his calm style of umpiring and leadership of the game.
He retired as umpire after the 1986 season.
After his umpiring career, Loogman continued to do some umpiring at the club-level for Amsterdam Pirates or Hoofddorp Pioniers.
His son John Loogman played baseball for both clubs and his daughter Ingrid played softball.
In later years, Jos Loogman enjoyed watching his grandchildren playing sports.
The webmaster of Grand Slam * Stats & News offers his condolences to Jos' son John and daughter Ingrid and other family and wishes them a lot of strength with this loss.
