Marco Wels steps down as Head Coach of DSS
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) -
Marco Wels has decided to step down as Head Coach of DSS after the 14-4 loss against Curaçao Neptunus on Sunday (June 16).
Third Base Coach José Baez has been appointed as his successor.
Dirk van 't Klooster, Richard Tensen and Patrick Howell also will remain in the staff as coach.
After Sunday's loss, DSS was 9-23 and in seventh place of the 8-team Dutch big league.
While the separation occured on Monday, DSS officially announced it two days later (today, Wednesday, June 19).
On Tuesday, DSS played a make-up game against Neptunus and lost 3-1.
The team was then led by José Baez.
In the press release, DSS states:
,,In good conditions by both parties, it had been decided that Marco Wels resigns as Head Coach of DSS as of Monday, June 17.
The reason is the lack of expected results and goals.
Besides that, despite having a good team-spirit, is was not completely succeeded that a team could be formed that played representative and recognizable baseball.
We want to thank Marco for his efforts and wish the the best of luck in the future.
His responsibilities will be takend over by the other members of the current coaching-staff.''
Marco Wels was named Head Coach of DSS in September of last year, a week after he had stepped down as Head Coach of Quick Amersfoort, whom he also led in the big league in his second season with the club.
The distance between his home and the site of Quick in Amersfoort was the main reason for stepping down.
At DSS, he succeeded Jerry Breek.
Wels confirmed that he has stepped down at DSS.
Wels: ,,The combination of the ambition of DSS and the reality plus some mentality is not in balance anymore.
And when that's the case, I'm not having pleasure in what I'm doing.
And that's a main reason for me to do something.
Before the season, there was some ambition, there were talks of reaching the top-four.
This is not anymore in one line.''
