Neptunus rallies in 4th inning to win against Amsterdam Pirates
Nederlands

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus decided the second game against L&D Amsterdam Pirates on Saturday (April 20) in the fourth inning and went on to win 5-2. With an 1-0 lead, Neptunus rallied for four runs in the fourth at bat.

In the opener on Thursday, Neptunus won 9-2 when it also had a productive inning, scoring five runs in the sixth. In that game, veteran righthander Rob Cordemans started for Amsterdam Pirates and became the first pitcher in Dutch baseball-history with 2,000 career StrikeOuts.

In today's game, there were not many basehits. Neptunus hit seven off of two pitchers. Pirates collected only three, which were all hit off of starter Orlando Yntema, who struckout ten batters.

Both teams got a baserunner in the first inning. For Amsterdam Pirates, Roelie Henrique led off with a single, but a double play followed. For Neptunus, Dwayne Kemp singled with two outs, but was left behind.

Neptunus then opened the score in the bottom of the second inning off of starter Kevin Heijstek, scoring an unearned run, as the Amsterdam-defense made two errors. Lead-off hitter Dudley Leonora reached on an error. With one out, Leonora stole second base and was able to move to third base when a throwing error followed. Moments later, he scored on a grounder by Shaldimar Daantji. Hereafter, Julian Goins walked and stole second base, but was left behind.

In the bottom of the third inning, rookie Thomas Kwakernaak took over for Pirates at third base for Niels van Weert. He was replaced out of precaution, due to an elbow-injury. Kwakernaak is the son of former big leaguer Peter Kwakernaak, who played in the highest division for Amsterdam Pirates, HCAW, Haarlem Nicols and Hoofddorp Pioniers in 1988-1996. He still plays in the third team of Amsterdam Pirates. The main-squad currently has to do without regular third baseman Rashid Gerard, who traveled to Curaçao on Friday due to family-circumstances. Max Clarijs, who is a back-up third baseman, was unavailable due to an injury he sustained a week earlier as catcher.

Amsterdam got into scoring position for the first time in the fourth inning. With two outs, Kenny Berkenbosch walked and stole second base, but then was left behind.

Neptunus took more distance in the fourth inning when it rallied for four runs on four basehits. Gianison Boekhoudt led off with a walk, then moved to third base when Dudley Leonora singled. He scored on a sacrifice fly from Quintin De Cuba. Neptunus again got runners on first and third base when Shaldimar Daantji singled. Two runs were then added on a following triple by Julian Goins, who later scored himself on a single by Jochem Koedijk.

From the fifth inning on, Neptunus got into scoring position only one more time. In the fifth, Dudley Leonora doubled, but stranded on second base. Jhan Rifaela pitched the final three innings for Pirates, allowed only one batter to reach base and was supported with a double play in the eighth.

Trailing 5-0, Amsterdam Pirates got one run back in the top of the fifth. Delano Selassa led off with walk, advanced on a wild pitch and a grounder, then scored on a single by Roelie Henrique. The latter stole second base, but the inning ended with a strikeout.

Pirates narrowed the deficit to 5-2 in the sixth inning. Gilmer Lampe led off with a triple and scored on a following grounder by Denzel Richardson.

The Amsterdam-team left a runner behind on first base in the eighth, then got another baserunner in the ninth off of closer Kevin Kelly. The game then ended with a double play.
