DSS scores late against HCAW and avoids sweep
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - DSS trailed early, took a lead, then scored again late in the game to win 10-5 against HCAW on Sunday (April 21) to avoid a 3-game sweep.

In the first two games, HCAW recorded two one-run victories.

In the opener on Thursday, HCAW broke an 1-1 tie with a 3-run rally in the eighth inning and went on to win 4-3. On Saturday, HCAW won only 1-0 in a game that almost was a no-hitter and ended with an appeal-play. Starting pitcher Kaj Timmermans was pitching a No-Hitter, but that ended in the ninth inning.

DSS collected 18 basehits, which is the highest total for one team this season. All nine starting players hit at least one basehit. Koen Halderman and Mitchel Dautzenberg both had three basehits and batted in two runs.

HCAW had ten basehits, including three by Oliver van der Wijst Severino, two of them being a double.

The 28 basehits also are the highest in one game this season for two teams combined.

Schedule, Standings & Scores

HCAW took an early lead by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning off of DSS-starter Tim Halderman. The righthander walked lead-off hitter Jeandro Tromp, who scored on an one-out single by Oliver van der Wijst Severino. Moments later, Rodney Daal also delivered a runscoring single. With two outs, Daal advanced on a wild pitch, then scored on a single by Ruendrick Piternella.

In the next five innings, HCAW got into scoring position only once. The team scored again in the sixth, but at that moment, DSS led with a 6-3 score.

DSS answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Dennis Burgersdijk. Devano Pieter led off with a single and scored on a following double by Tino van Erk. With two outs and Van Erk on third base, Aldi Guzman hit a runscoring single to narrow the deficit to 3-2.

After leaving two runners behind in the second inning, DSS struck with three runs in the third at bat. All three runs were unearned, as the HCAW-defense made two costly errors. Lead-off hitter Tino van Erk reached on an error and moved on a single by Brian Raap. A sacrifice bunt by Ibrahin Redan didn't result in an out and so, the bases were loaded. The tying run was then scored when next batter Aldi Guzman walked. Next, Raap was eliminated at third base on a pick-off by catcher Rodney Daal. Burgersdijk followed with a strikeout. Hereafter, Koen Halderman singled, which brought Guzman to second base. Redan advanced to third, then scored on a following error. The next run was added when Runai Coran also singled. And so, DSS now led 5-3.

After stranding two runners in the fourth, DSS added another run in the fifth. Leandro Anasagasti led off with a walk and scored on an one-out double by Mitchel Dautzenberg.

Both teams left a runner on third base in the sixth inning. HCAW then narrowed the deficit to 6-4 in the seventh off of new pitcher Sander Helmendach. Ruendrick Piternella led off with a walk and Arthur Lugtmeijer singled. Piternella later scored on a grounder by Berend Ruben, but HCAW stranded another runner on third base.

DSS got the run back immediately in its seventh at bat. With one out, Runai Coran walked and he scored on a 2-out single by Devano Pieter.

In the top of the eighth, it was HCAW that scored another run. With one out, Oliver van der Wijst Severino doubled, moved on a wild pitch and scored on a 2-out double by Patrick Bok.

Leading 7-5, DSS took more distance and decided the game by scoring three runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Ian Delemarre became the new pitcher for HCAW. He gave up a lead-off single to lead-off hitter Diamond Silberie. With one out, he stole second base, but then was eliminated trying to steal third base. With two outs, Aldi Guzman and Leandro Anasagasti walked and both scored on a following double by Koen Halderman. He moved on a single by Runai Coran, which led to another pitching change. Timo van Ancum took over, but was greeted with a runscoring single from Mitchel Dautzenberg that increased the lead to 10-5. The bases got loaded when Van Ancum hit Devano Pieter with a pitch, but the three runners were left behind.

The top of the ninth began with a double from Arthur Lugtmeijer. However, he was eliminated in a double play on an appeal-play after the next batter flied out. Norbert Jongerius then singled, stole second base, advanced on a throwing error, but stranded on third base, as the game ended with a strikeout.
