Neptunus closes series against DSS with big win; Milestone for Shaldimar Daantji
Nederlands

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus won the finale of its 3-games series against DSS on Sunday (April 28) with an 11-1 score to complete a sweep.

In the opener on Thursday-evening, Neptunus decided the game late. The team was held scoreless in the first six innings, then rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and went onto win 6-0.

Neptunus also decided the second game of its series against DSS late on Friday-evening and won only 5-4. Trailing 2-1 after three innings, Neptunus came alongside in the fourth, then scored three runs in the fifth.

Today, Neptunus led 5-0 after four innings and decided the game with a 5-run rally in the sixth inning.

Before the game, veteran Neptunus-outfielder Shaldimar Daantji was honored by his club, as he was to play in his 600th big league-game. In his career, Daantji also played for Amsterdam Pirates, Almere '90 and Sparta-Feyenoord. He made his big league-debut in 2002 and already was honored by the Dutch Association earlier after winning the World Championship-title with the Netherlands National Baseball Team in 2011. Daantji became the tenth player in history to have played 600 or more games in the highest league. The all-time list is head by Dirk van 't Klooster, who played in 907 games. Coincidentally, Van 't Klooster now is the Hitting Coach for opponent DSS.

DSS got a chance to open the score in the top of the second inning off of starter Misja Harcksen. With two outs and Tino van Erk (fielder's choice) on first base, Koen Werkman walked, but Harcksen then closed with a strikeout.

Moments later, Neptunus scored three unearned runs in its second at bat off of starter Tim Halderman. The bases got loaded quickly. Gianison Boekhoudt led off with an infield-hit, Shaldimar Daantji reached on an error and Dudley Leonora walked. Quintin De Cuba became the fourth batter in a row to reach base and his single brought in the first run. With two outs, two more runs were added on a single by Stijn van der Meer.

Neptunus scored another unearned run in the third inning. This time, Dwayne Kemp led off and reached on an error. With one out, he moved on a single by Shaldimar Daantji, then scored on a single by Dudley Leonora. That also led to an early pitching change, as Sander Helmendach took over. He struckout the first batter he faced, then a grounder ended the at bat, but Neptunus now led 4-0.

Neptunus scored its fifth run with two outs in the fourth. With one out, Stijn van der Meer was hit by a pitch, but he was caught stealing moments later. Next batter Benjamin Dille walked. He then scored on a double down the rightfield-line by Dwayne Kemp, who tried to stretch his hit into a triple, but was eliminated at third base. At that moment, Dille already had scored before the out was made that ended the inning.

After having left runners behind on second and third base in the fifth inning, Neptunus decided the game with a 5-run rally in the sixth at bat. Moreno Vork took over the DSS-pitching, but he got the bases loaded quickly. Jochem Koedijk led off with a walk, then Stijn van der Meer singled and Benjamin Dille also walked. After an infield-fly, the first run was scored when Gianison Boekhoudt also walked. A pitching change followed and Robyn Clara took over. He was greeted with a 2-run single by Shaldimar Daantji. With two outs, Quintin De Cuba and Julian Goins added runscoring singles to lift the lead to 10-0.

After having stranded a runner in scoring position in the second inning, DSS reached base in each of the next three innings. Two runners were left at first base and another one was caught stealing. In the sixth inning, the Haarlem-team was retired in order by Berry van Driel.

In the top of the seventh, DSS erased the 10-run difference and got a chance to do some more scoring, but left three runners behind. Brendan Schoemaker became the new pitcher for Neptunus, but he walked Leandro Anasagasti and Tino van Erk. The latter was forced out on a grounder by pinch-hitter Daniel Heiligers. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Mitchel Dautzenberg walked, then a run was scored when Schoemaker hit Devano Pieter with a pitch. But with the bases still loaded, Schoemaker closed with a strikeout.

Moments later, Neptunus again reached the 10-run difference on three consecutive basehits. Stijn van der Meer (who was 3-for-4) led off with a single, which brought in new pitcher Ben Neijndorff. He gave up singles to Benjamin Dille and Dwayne Kemp that brought in Van der Meer and ended the game.
