ENSCHEDE (Neth.) -
Host Tex Town Tigers opened the 36th edition of the annual J.C.J. Mastenbroek Tournament at its site in Enschede on Friday-evening (March 29) with a 5-3 win against Barracudas Zürich from Switzerland.
Later on Friday-evening, the softball-tournament went underway.
Under very acceptable weather conditions and a clear sky, it was Barracudas that opened the score in the top of the first inning when Ryan Hooper homered with one out off of starting pitcher Thijs Slot.
With that, Hooper not only accounted for the first run of the tournament, but also the first basehit.
Slot went on to throw a fine game, striking out eight batters.
The lead was shortlived, as Tex Town Tigers answered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning off of starter Eliot Berger.
With one out, Tieme Nahuis doubled and Jorick Kers singled.
The tying run was then scored on a double by Tom Bornebroek.
Next, the home team got the bases loaded when Liam Stolmeijer walked.
A sacrifice fly by Mikkel Oosterveld then gave TTT a 2-1 lead.
Tex Town Tigers added two runs in the third inning on a double by Thomas Maathuis and a single by Tieme Nahuis.
In the fourth, TTT increased its lead to 5-1 when a run was scored on two errors.
In the top of the fifth, Barracudas came back, scoring two unearned runs.
With one out, Manuel Hirtz reached on an error.
And with two outs, the bases got loaded after a walk and a single.
Eliot Berger then produced a 2-run single, but a flyout ended the inning and the game.
