Amsterdam Pirates wins Urbanus Tournament; Australian debuts for Twins
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - On Sunday (March 31), L&D Amsterdam Pirates recorded a big 9-0 shutout-win against Twins Oosterhout to become the winner of the 37th edition of the In Memoriam Charles Urbanus Sr. Tournament. The tournament ended with a scoreless tie between host HCAW and Curaçao Neptunus.

It was the third time that Pirates won the tournament and the first time since 2016. Host HCAW won the event in the past two years. Reigning champion Curaçao Neptunus finished in fourth and last place. Last year, Neptunus returned as participant of the tournament for the first time since 2001.

In today's first game, Pirates rallied for four runs in the first inning off of Australian righthander Nick Veale, who made his pitching-debut for Twins. Veale arrived last Monday in Oosterhout. In his first inning, he gave up three hits. In 2015-2018, the 26-year old righthander pitched for Perth Heat in the Australian Baseball League.

In the final game, Neptunus outhit HCAW 4-2, but both teams were unable to score in seven innings. HCAW also added a new player to its roster a few days ago, Curaçao-born outfielder Renaigel Martis. He played in all three games for the Bussum-squad in the tournament.

Final Standings:
1. L&D Amsterdam Pirates, 2. HCAW, 3. Twins Oosterhout, 4. Curaçao Neptunus.

Individual Awards:

Game 5 - L&D Amsterdam Pirates vs. Twins Oosterhout

Amsterdam Pirates immediately struck in the first inning off of Australian righthander Nick Veale, who made his debut for Twins. He was greeted with a lead-off single from Delano Selassa, then walked next batters Niels van Weert and Gilmer Lampe. Veale followed with a strikeout, but then gave up a 2-run double to Kenny Berkenbosch. Moments later, Lampe scored on a wild pitch. With two outs, Rashid Gerard also walked, then Max Clarijs delivered a runscoring single to increase the lead to 4-0.Linoy Croes led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch.

Mic van de Ven took over the Twins-pitching in the fifth and retired the side. But in the next inning, Pirates rallied again. With one out, Kenny Berkenbosch and Linoy Croes walked and the bases got loaded when Rashid Gerard singled. A run was then scored when Max Clarijs also walked and the next run was added on a wild pitch. When Victor Draijer also walked, it re-loaded the bases and that brought in Koen Postelmans as new pitcher. He got a flyout and a force out to end the inning.

Amsterdam-starter Jim Ploeger encountered no problems in the four innings he pitched. The lefthander was supported with a double play in the second inning. He saw Twins get into scoring position with two outs in the third. Ruar Verkerk and Dennis De Quint then singled. Verkerk stole third base, but the team left the runners behind on first and third base.

Twins got its second and last runner in scoring position in the fifth inning off of Maickel Rietel. With one out, he walked Brian Biezen, who stole second base, but he stranded there.

Relievers Nick Veltkamp and Tom Stuifbergen both retired the side in the next two innings.

Amsterdam added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Niels van Weert (single) and Denzel Richardson (fielder's choice) then respectively scored on a grounder by Kenny Berkenbosch and a single by Linoy Croes.

Amsterdam's recently added pitcher Jhan Rifaela arrived on Saturday and was in uniform with the team today. He pitched in the bullpen, but didn't get into action yet.

Game 6 - HCAW vs. Curaçao Neptunus

The tournament ended with a scoreless tie in a 7-inning game between HCAW and Neptunus. With that, HCAW finished in second place. Neptunus ended up a tie with Twins, but finished in fourth place base on the head-to-head result against Twins.

HCAW-starter Dennis Burgersdijk encountered no problems in the first four innings. He gave up a lead-off single in the first inning to Stijn van der Meer, but he stranded on first base. In the second inning, Dudley Leonora (error) and Quintin De Cuba (walk) reached base for Neptunus, but both were caught stealing. In the third, a runner was forced out and in the fourth, Dwayne Kemp was caught stealing.

Neptunus got its biggest scoring opportunity in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs, Burgersdijk was relieved by Ian Delemarre. He walked Gregory Muller and Julian Goins. Jochem Koedijk followed with a single. Muller was waved home, but was eliminated at the plate, ending the inning.

Delemarre retired the side in the sixth, then new pitcher (and former Neptunian) Jiorgeny Casimiri was supported with a double play in the seventh inning.

HCAW got into scoring position twice off of five different pitchers. Catcher Gianison Boekhoudt also threw another inning for Neptunus during this exhibition season. With that, it appears that he probably will be used more as an additional pitcher in the regular season.

With one out in the second inning, Neptunus-starter Misja Harcksen walked Ruendrick Piternella. He moved on a wild pitch and reached third on a grounder by Patrick Bok, but was left behind. In the third, Bob van der Meer led off for HCAW, reached on an error and moved on a wild pitch. But he became the second and last runner to get into scoring position for HCAW.

In the next four innings, four pitchers allowed only three batters to reach base. Gianison Boekhoudt pitched the fifth inning for Neptunus and was supported with a double play.

The last time that a gamed ended with a 0-0 score in the Urbanus Tournament was in 2012. Back then, it happened twice. HCAW then played a 0-0 tie against Robur '58, which then participated for the first (and only) time. The second scoreless tie was recorded by Amsterdam Pirates vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers. The 2012 tournament has been the lone one with five participating teams.
