Pioniers opens Super Cup with win; defeats for Adegeest, Quick Amersfoort

AZANNO DECIMO (Italy) -
On Monday (August 29), the European Super Cup Men went underway in Italy with the participation of 18 teams.
These teams are divided into three pools of six teams each.
The games are played on four different sites, located in the region Friuli-Venezia Giulia in the northeast part of Italy near Venice.
The Netherlands is represented by three teams: Adegeest, Hoofddorp Pioniers and Quick Amersfoort.
On the first day of the tournament, nine games were scheduled with all teams playing one game.
Things will get busy on Tuesday and Wednesday.
On both days, a total of 18 games are scheduled with all teams playing two games on each day.
The Play-Offs for two different Cups then begin on Thursday.
After completion of the prelimary round on Wednesday, the three pools will split.
The three best teams of each pool will continue playing for the Super Cup, while the other teams will play for the ESF Cup.
Last year, Adegeest, Pioniers and Quick also participated when the event was held in Czech capital Prague, but none of the teams qualified for the Super Cup Play-Offs.
Pioniers reached the ESF Cup-final, but then lost 8-6 to Magos de Tenerife (Spain).
Nieuwegein Diamonds last year was the fourth Dutch representative.
That team did qualify for the Super Cup, but finished in twelfth and last place.
On Monday, the three Dutch teams all played their game on a hot day in Azzano Decimo, which also will be the site for the final games coming Saturday.
In the opening game of the tournament, Adegeest met Brasschaat Braves (Belgium) in Pool B and lost 12-1 in four innings.
In the late afternoon, in Pool C, Hoofddorp Pioniers played against Junior Alpina (Italy) and won 8-1 in six innings.
In the evening, the first day closed with another Netherlands vs. Italy match-up, as Quick Amersfoort faced Lupi Pro Roma in Pool A and ended up short, losing 3-1.

Czech U23 (Czech Rep.) vs. Gladsaxe (Denmark) 13-1 (3½ inn.), Eagles Praha (Czech Rep.) vs. Cavigal Nice (France) 13-3 (4 inn.).
Pool C:
Tempo Praha (Czech Rep.) vs. Magos de Tenerife (Spain) 2-4; Chicaboo's Stabroek (Belgium) vs. Hørsholm Hurricanes (Denmark) 0-4.

Brasschaat Braves vs. Adegeest
Adegeest opened the score in the first inning off of Pablo Skladny, who has the Germany nationality.
American Travis Havins led off for Adegeest and reached on an error, then stole second base.
Moments later, he scored when next batter Sherman Laveist singled.
Hereafter, Skladny retired the next three batters.
For Adegeest, this would be their lone run in the game.
The team from Voorschoten got a baserunner in each of the next three innings, but didn't get beyond first base.
In the second, Erik-Jan van Asperen singled with two outs, but stranded.
In the third, Havins led off with a bunt-single, but then was called out for interference during a steal-attempt.
And in the fourth, Giovanni Pourier reached on an error, but was caught stealing.
Veteran Dutch pitcher Arjan Baanen retired the side (two strikeouts) in the first inning.
In the second at bat, he walked Dutch player Enrique Javier, but followed with two strikeouts.
Javier then stole second base, but stranded there.
The Belgian opponent then rallied for seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the third inning.
With runners on second and third base and no outs, Argentinian Juan Malaczuk delivered a single to tie the score.
Hereafter, with one out, Leonardo Latasa (also from Argentina) hit a 2-run single, then Pablo Skladny added a 2-run double.
With two outs, Roman Godoy Herbel, the third player from Argentina in the Belgium line-up, hit a 2-run homerun to lift the lead to 7-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, Rikkert Wienia took over the pitching for Baanen, but gave up five more runs.
Wout Cnops first hit a 2-run single and with one out, Pablo Skladny hit a walk-off, 3-run homerun that made it 12-1 to end the game.

Junior Alpina vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers
Pioniers opened the score in the first inning off of Argentinian pitcher Juan Ado Potolicchio.
With one out, Glennsig Polonius singled, advanced on a wild pitch, then scored on a 2-out double by Enio Kwas.
Jair Thompson started for Pioniers, struckout four batters in the first two innings and was supported with a double play in the first at bat.
The Italian opponent left three runners behind in the second inning, then came alongside in the third at bat.
Thompson got the bases loaded, then Mexican Jaudiel Olaiz took over the pitching for Pioniers.
He began with a strikeout, then saw a run being scored on a force play-grounder, but closed with another strikeout.
In the remainder of the game, Olaiz added eight more strikeouts and alllowed Alpina to get into scoring position only one more time.
In the top of the fourth inning, Pioniers re-took the lead, scoring two runs.
Enio Kwas led off with a triple, then the bases got loaded when Jair Thompson was hit by a pitch and Idelgardo Raap walked.
With one out, Angelo Clementina walked to bring in a run, then an error led to the next run to make it 3-1.
Pioniers took more distance in the fifth on two homeruns.
Glennsig Polonius led off with a single, then Eldrick Dijkhoff homered.
Hereafter, Enio Kwas reached on an error and with one out, it was Idelgardo Raap, who belted a 2-run homerun.
The 7-run difference was reached in the top of the sixth inning.
With two outs, Polonius tripled, then scored on a single by Dijkhoff to make it 8-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Olaiz struckout the side to end the game.

Lupi Pro Roma vs. Quick Amersfoort
Both teams scored a run in the first inning.
Emeron Lourens led off for Quick with a single and advanced on a wild pitch from starter Sebastian Gervasutti, who also struckout three batters in this inning.
With one out, another wild pitch enabled Lourens to move to third base and he then scored with two outs on a passed ball.
The Italians came alongside immediately in its first at bat off of Niek Nieuwenhuizen.
He gave up a lead-off single to Gustavo Godoy.
An error on a following possible double play-grounder by Teo Migliavacca Skladny then led to runners on second and third base.
Manuel Godoy followed with a grounder which tied the score.
A strikeout and groundout ended the at bat.
Roma left two runners behind in the third off Nieuwenhuizen, who also struckout three batters in this at bat.
Gervasutti struckout the side in the second and third inning.
Last year, he participated with the National Team of Argentina in the World Championship Men Softball in Canada, as were Gustavo Godoy, Manuel Godoy and Teo Skladny.
However, Gervasutti is now listed as having the Italian nationality, while Skladny's nationality is German.

In the top of the fourth, Czech player Karel Kadečka, who had replaced Anthoy Hosé as designated hitter, led off for Quick with a single and Jerome Wouters then also singled.
Gervasutti struckout the next two batters, but threw another wild pitch that led to runners on second and third base.
Hereafter, the veteran pitcher closed the inning with another strikeout to bring his total to twelve.
In the bottom of the fourth, it was Roma that stranded runners on second and third base.
Gervasutti led off with a single, then Argentinian Maximiliam Montero walked with one out.
Hereafter, Czech Ondřej Němec took over the pitching for Nieuwenhuizen.
He saw the runners move on a sacrifice bunt, then closed with a strikeout.
In the top of the fifth, Quick got a chance to re-take the lead, as it got the bases loaded.
Anthony Beaumont led off with a single, then Ron Dix was hit by a pitch.
The two moved on a passed ball, then Beaumont was eliminated at the plate on a grounder by Emeron Lourens.
With Dix on third base, the latter stole second base.
After a grounder accounted for the second out, a force play was created by walking Karel Kadečka intentionally.
The inning ended with a flyout an with that, three runners were left behind.
As is the case in many of these situations after leaving the bases loaded, it is the opponent that reacts with a run.
That happened in the bottom of the fifth when Gustavo Godoy led off with a homerun.
With one out, the Italians added another run.
Manuel Godoy then singled, which led to another pitching change for Quick.
54-year old veteran Ricardo Bryson took over, but was greeted with a runscoring double by Roberto Manente.
Hereafter, Bryson struckout two of the next three batters.
With Roma now leading 3-1, Maximiliam Montero took over the pitching for Gervasutti in the top of the sixth inning.
The Argentinian retired the side.
In the top of the seventh, Quick got another scoring opportunity.
Anthony Beaumont and Ron Dix began the inning with walks.
A sacrifice bunt-attempt then ended in a flyout, but moments later Beaumont stole third base.
Hereafter, it was Dix who stole second base.
A strikeout then accounted for the second out.
Karel Kadečka then again was walked intentionally to set up a force play.
Quick stranded again three runners when a flyout ended the at bat and the game.

Tempo Praha vs. Magos de Tenerife
Magos trailed 2-0 after six innings, then rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to turn the game (which lasted almost two hours) its way.
A single by Julian Stefani singled in the first run, then Luiger Pinto Suarez followed with a 2-run double.
A wild pitch accounted for the fourth run.
Winning pitcher James Darby struckout 12 batters.
Spectrum Praha vs. SK Medvedi
Pitchers Ales Jetmar and Jaroslav Brenik threw a combined No-Hitter and struckout 18 batters together.
Only two Croatian batters reached base, one on a walk, the other on an error.
Leading 1-0, the Czechs scored three runs in the fourth, highlighted by a 2-run double by Petr Vácha.
Chicaboo's Stabroek vs. Hørsholm Hurricanes
Veteran Danish pitcher Martin Holmberg started Hurricanes and struckout six batters in four innings.
The 41-year old righthander gave up only three hits.
German Sacks hit a 2-run homerun for the Danish squad in the fifth inning.
Czech U23 vs. Gladsaxe
The National Czech Under-23 team scored its runs in the first three innings on only eight basehits.
Jakub Holobradek hit a 2-run homerun in the third inning.
Jakub Petrik was 3-for-3, including a triple, scored three runs and batted in four.
Eagles Praha vs. Cavigal Nice
Eagles trailed 3-1 halfway the fourth inning, but then rallied for eleven (!) runs in the bottom of the fourth to end the game via the mercy-rule.
There were eight hits in the inning, including 2-run doubles by Luboš Procházka, Daniel Černý, Jan Janoušek and Jan Svatoň and a one-run double by Jan Strádal.
The game ended when Tomáš Benda hit a 2-run homerun.
Pessac Panthères vs. Stenløse Bulls
Panthères led 4-1 after three innings and hold onto the lead, while Bulls added two runs in the sixth.
Leading only 2-1, Spaniard Tomas Orlando Diaz Barrera hit a 2-run homerun for the French team in the third.
