Baseball & Softball not on Olympic Programme 2020
Nederlands
BUENOS AIRES (Argentina) - Baseball and Softball are not returning on the Olympic Programme for the Olympic Games of 2020 and 2024. Instead, the members of the International Olympic Committee voted to reinstate Wrestling. Squash also was on the shortlist to become an additional sport for the 2020 Games, which were awarded to Tokyo (Japan) on Saturday.

Wrestling is one of the 25 core sports for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. But in the beginning of this year, wrestling wasn't part of the proposal for the core sports for the 2020 Games. Since then, the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA) introduced major changes, including new rules and a better sports presentation to attract more spectators and a younger audience.

Wrestling received 49 votes. Baseball/Softball obtained 24 votes and Squash 22 votes.

After demonstration tournaments in 1984 (Los Angeles) and 1988 (Seoul), baseball became a Gold Medal-sport in 1992 (Barcelona), while softball made its Olympic debut in 1996 (Atlanta). However, in 2005, it was decided that the two sports were no part of the Olympic Games in 2012 (London). And so, baseball and softball were last played during the Olympic Games of 2008 in Beijing.
