In the sixties, broadcasting companies VARA and KRO made a joined radio-sportsprogramme, called Marathon. When AVRO also joined, the name was changed to Langs de Lijn, a name which was created by Peek Jellema.

The first episode of the programme debuted in January 1967 at the Hilversum 3-channel. In April 1979, the show moved to Hilversum 2, which became Radio 1 in December 1985. The 5,000th episode was broadcast on January 1, 2002 and the 10,000th episode followed on March 25, 2012. The show won the Marconi Award in 2001 for the best informative radio-programme.

In the programme, there are live commentaries of games of several sports going on at the moment of broadcast. But the show also includes the latest sports news, interviews and music. Initially, Langs de Lijn was broadcast daily with an evening-show during weekdays. Nowadays, it only has shows on Saturday and Sunday.

In January 2016, the new show Langs de Lijn En Omstreken was introduced, which has daily episodes in the evening on Monday through Friday between 8:30 and 11 PM. This talkshow-programme is made by broadcast companies EO and NOS and also covers sports activities, as well as general news. Both programmes use the same hosts.

Since its debut, Langs de Lijn has covered many baseball- and softball-games/events. One of the first radio-announcers to cover baseball was legendary Dick van Rijn (1914-1996). Amongst the baseball-announcers through the years were Andy Houtkamp, Theo Plasschaert and Ronald Boot. Houtkamp and Plasschaert are still covering the sports. Since 1991, Boot is the host of Saturday-evening edition of Langs de Lijn.

Today, the 50th anniversary was celebrated with a special edition, featuring historic clips and interviews with former announcers, including Hans Eysvogel (equitation), Kees Jansma (soccer/skating), Jack van Gelder (soccer) and Bep van Houdt (tennis). Presenting the edition were former hosts, including Koos Postema, Rocky Tuhuteru, Govert van Brakel and Tom Blom. Postema presented the show in 1977-1989, Tuhuteru in 1987-2000 and Van Brakel was the presenter in 1991-2009. Blom hosted the show in the seventies and eighties alongside Willem Ruis, who later became a wellknown host of big TV-gameshows and unfortunately passed away at age 41 in 1986. Another longtime employee of the programme was Herman van der Velde, who selected the music in 1976-2006, who today was a special guest in the 50th anniversary-edition.
