SOUTH SURREY, British Columbia (Canada) - The Dutch Softball Team on Wednesday lost its first game of the Canada Cup Tournament.
After winning its first four games, the Dutch team was beaten 5-1 by Florida Quicksilver from the USA. After four productive games, the Dutch team today had only four basehits.
Florida had won its first three games, but then lost the next two. Last year, the Dutch also lost to Florida with the same score. Despite the loss, the Dutch team is still in line for clinching a spot in the tournament Play-Offs.
On Thursday, the Dutch team meets Puerto Rico and Japan Elite on the last day of the preliminary round. The Play-Offs open on Friday.

Florida opened the score in the first inning when Holly Currie homered with two outs off Dutch starter Judith van Kampen, but in the second part of the first inning, the Dutch came alongside immediately.
Saskia Kosterink led off with a single, then moved on a sac-bunt by Ellen Venker and scored on a double by Daisy de Peinder. Sandra Gouverneur followed with an infield-hit, but two runners were left as Florida-pitcher Megan Rhodes struckout next batters Marloes Fellinger and Noémi Boekel. In the remainder of the game, the Dutch team would reach second base only two more times with only one out, but everytime, Megan Rhodes succeeded in coming out of the inning unharmed, assisted by her defense. She struckout nine batters, walked only two and gave up only one more basehit after having given up three in the first inning.

After leaving two runners in scoring position in the second inning, Florida added three runs in the third at bat. Lauren Walton led off with a single and moved on a sac-bunt by Lauren Parker. After next batter Holly Currie walked, Judith van Kampen was relieved by Rebecca Soumeru, but she gave up an RBI-single to Tonya Callahan, who was replaced by pinch-runner Richell McGarva. With two outs, Currie and McGarva both scored on a single by Sara Vaughn to increase the lead to 4-1.

Rebecca Soumeru retired the side in the fourth and fifth inning, then gave up a lead-off homerun to Tonya Callahan in the sixth inning that gave Florida a 5-1 lead.
