SOUTH SURREY, British Columbia (Canada) - The Dutch Softball Team continues its strong playing on the Canada Cup Tournament, as it opened the Play-Offs on Friday-afternoon with a 5-0 shutout-win vs. Canada Elite.
The Dutch team now will meet Japan Elite in its next game on Friday-evening and can take revenge for yesterday's 2-1 loss against the Japanese squad.
The Dutch team had ten basehits, including three by Sandra Gouverneur. Winning pitcher Judith van Kampen gave up only two hits in 6 2/3 inning, after which Rebecca Soumeru completed the game.
Theoretically, the Dutch team is two victories away from the all-deciding Final on Sunday!

The Dutch team opened the score in the second inning when the Canadian defense committed three errors. Marloes Fellinger led off with a single, then reached second base safely on a throwing error after a grounder by Noémi Boekel. After the two advanced on a sac-bunt by Debbie Connor, another throwing error followed on a grounder by Marjan Smit, enabling Fellinger to score. Next, Boekel scored the second run on the third throwing error in the at bat, this time on a grounder by Marieke Jansen.

Besides making defensive errors, the Canadian team also made some baserunning mistakes. In the home of the second, they got their first two batters on base, but instead of scoring a run, they ran themself out of the inning. Cambria McKay led off with a single, then Shannon Rossiter reached base on an error. With two runners on, Jennifer Yee flied out, but there still was a scoring opportunity. However, McKay was then caught stealing on third base and moments later Rossiter was thrown out trying to steal second base. Dutch starter Judith van Kampen then allowed only one batter to reach base in the next three innings.

After leaving four runners in the previous three innings, the Dutch team added three runs in the sixth at bat on three basehits. With one out, Marjan Smit singled, resulting in a pitching change. With two outs, Saskia Kosterink walked, then Ellen Venker followed with an RBI-single. Sandra Gouverneur increased the lead to 5-0 when she then hit a 2-run double.

In the home sixth, Judith van Kampen walked the lead-off hitter, but didn't encounter any problems. In the seventh, she walked a batter with one out, after which Rebecca Soumeru took over and ended the game with two flyouts.

SOUTH SURREY, British Columbia (Canada) - The Dutch National Team also won its next game in the Play-Offs of the Canada Cup Tournament and now even is close to the Final!
On Friday-evening, they won 3-2 vs. Japan Elite, taking revenge for an earlier 2-1 loss. Against the Japanese, the Dutch were trailing 2-0, but then came alongside and scored the winning run in the sixth inning on a double by Noémi Boekel.
The Dutch team now will meet Australia on Saturday-evening and will not finish lower than third place on the event. When the Dutch beat the Australians, it will clinch the Final on Sunday.

It was another great game for the Dutch team, which came back from behind to win it and remain in the race for the final. Dutch pitcher Kristi DeVries gave up two runs in the first two innings, but then allowed only three baserunners in the remaining five at bats in which the Dutch played solid defense.
In the first inning, Sayuri Honda led off the game with a double, moved on a sac-bunt, then scored on a sac-fly. In the next inning, Yuri Masuyama singled with one out and stole second base. She then scored on a 2-out double by Yukiyo Miya, who later was thrown out trying to score on a hit by Honda.

The Dutch team answered with a run in the home second when Marloes Fellinger homered with one out. Yesterday, she also homered vs. Puerto Rico. With two outs, Debbie Connor tripled, but stranded at third base.
In the third inning, the Dutch were close to the tying run when Kinge Bouma led off with a triple, but a groundout, strikeout and flyout followed.

The Dutch team did tie the score in the fifth inning, but also left the bases loaded. With Marjan Smit (fielder's choice) on base and two outs, Saskia Kosterink singled. This brought Smit to third base, while Kosterink reached second base on the throw to third. The bases were then loaded when Marieke Jansen walked. After a pitching change, Sandra Gouverneur also walked to bring in the tying run, but a strikeout followed, leaving three runners.
In the sixth inning, Marloes Fellinger led off with a double and was replaced by pinch-runner Nathalie Gosewehr, who then scored when next batter Noémi Boekel also doubled, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.
Kristi DeVries gave up singles in the third, fourth and fifth inning, but only one of them reached second base. After retiring the side in the sixth, she did the same in the seventh on three grounders to secure the lead and the win.
